From the Author
Knowing up front that poetry and prose is a tough sell I am thrilled this book's first printing sold to the last one hundred copies. To celebrate I've re-released Misery Loves Company, taking author's license to edit and expand it, including new artwork from Nola Van Della and photos from my old 'hood.

I wanted to retain the original character, however I took this opportunity to fix some of the shortcomings that escaped me in 1993. Several of the original's short stories appear in my autobiography, Not Your Average American Girl, so I have either pulled or rewrote them. I've also added eight works written in or about that period from 1985-1992.

Above all I still want it to hit like a bitchslap from a crack dealer, pulling back the curtain on a world most people never see, a world that many others never escape alive. Some of the original language is politically incorrect but it was my truth when I first wrote it, so I'm not going to wimp out and try to clean it up now.

Finally, I want nobody's sympathy; I survived that world and am stronger for it. However many other people still trapped there and with economic times as they are, more people will end up in places like I once lived, feeling just as hopeless or more so than I was. They deserve your compassion.

Misery Loves Company - Indeed!

I have been an avid reader of the few works Christine Beatty has published and of course assorted editorials and features in various magazines. Reading 'Misery Loves Company' is like taking a trip on a roller coaster that is at once scary and frightening as well as alluring and exhilarating. Entering the world of a transsexual who has run the gamut of life, transformation, redemption and triumph is quite the read. A MUST HAVE for anyone who is on this journey, intending to go thru it and others who are curious... kudos to Christine for writing this.

About the Author
Anthony Giddens, former director of the London School of Economics and a current member of the House of Lords, is a world-renowned social theorist who has written over forty books. He has written on just about every major topic in sociology but is best known for his work on modernization theory and globalization.

Mitchell Duneier is an award-winning urban ethnographer at Princeton University and the City University of New York Graduate Center. He is most famous for his book Sidewalk, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Duneier's research focuses on the urban poor and other groups in the margins of society.

Richard P. Appelbaum, the MacArthur chair of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has won several awards for his teaching and works mainly on globalization and labor issues. Appelbaum is the coauthor of Behind the Label.

Deborah Carr is a demographer and an active teacher at Rutgers University, where she regularly teaches the intro course. Her work focuses on sociology of the life course, aging, social psychology, and gender. Carr's latest book, Worried Sick: How Stress Hurts Us and How to Bounce Back, looks at how stress gets under our skin, makes us sick, and how and why people cope with stress differently.

Critical view on today's sociology - where are we headed ?

The book [2nd Edition] is very easy to read and understand. A must for students of other fields who want to have a peep into sociology without spending too much time. This book discusses the major question of modern sociology. Not only does it give the reader fast insight into some major matters of sociology, but it also saves the reader many hours of unnecessary reading for an introduction to the subject.

this book is an excellent choice for students and teachers in sociology classes. good readings, good studies, and overall good information.
Also this book is smaller than the actual one, but its good because it has the same info as the larger one just less pictures, but all the studies, information, and charts remain.

up to date and accessible

I have used this book along a more traditional sociology text book, Gellles and Levine 6th Edition, and this book has taken more and more of lecture time. I like the fact that it pust sociology into a global perspective, though I do think some of the examples are geared toward traditional, middle class university students, and not the working class, non traditional students I work with at a community college. However, compared to the G/L book this text is much shorter and conscise. A great introductory text book for sociology, with personal examples to think critically and sociologically about globalization. I also like its inclusion of feminist theory and general gender issues through out the book, not just in the gender chapter. I highly recommend it.

Great introductory text

A volume of the Oxford Introduction to Language Study series, Kramsch has written a delightful little book. There are seven chapters covering current issues in the field followed by readings, references, and a glossary.

Besides its brevity and well designed layout this book also excels at clarity. Many authors try to say the same thing but in far too many words. Kramsch has managed to write a book that is an asset to the series.

There is nothing new or startling in the contents of the book. Nor, given its short length, is everything from the field included. However, she has done a fine job of selecting the pertinent information that is "must know" in this field.

a dense but well written introduction to the subject.

I have been reading three books in the "Oxford Introduction to Language Study" series and to be honest I found Kramsch' book a bit less accessible than Spolsky's "Sociolinguistics" whose style was somewhat more fluent. This said, the book is still an excellent introduction to the subject. Readers should be aware that it is in the nature of an 80 page survey to condense matters (just imagine the huge amount of literature that has been written on the subject). However, students should also be aware that the terminology introduced is necessary for the study of the subject. Rather than reading 300 pages, I am more than pleased the Kramsch has succeeded in providing a clear outline in 80.

This intro. to culture is an excellent distillation of language and culture, suited especially for anyone who has read her previous book published by Oxford Univ. Press CONTEXT AND CULTURE. Context and Culture (C&C)has many illuminating examples from literature, speech and and media. Kramsch writes densely--every word counts--and readers will find that there is always something new to learn on every reading. It's no surprise that Widdowson, remarkable for his incredibly tight prose, was her editor. Kramsch is a razor-sharp thinker and an accomplished writer. An intellectual of the best sort.

So, to best appreciate this short intro. to culture, read C&C first.

To the frustrated engineering-student-teacher assistant, irritated that such simple ideas as "culture", "communication" and "understanding" are made less simple by Kramsch: Perhaps these concepts are not so simple after all.

If you like great Achitecture and outstanding engineering..

Middleton has spoiled us with quality books, and "Manhattan Gateway" is no exception.
This book contains a well-balanced selection of how and why this beautiful structure came to life, as well as the incredible engineering that made Penn Station possible.
I am not a New Yorker or an American at all.. I live in Rome, Italy and the similarities with the baths of Diocletian and Caracalla is daunting.
Middleton focuses on technical as well as architectural details and I strongly recommend this book to whoever is interested in either subject.
Also noteworthy are the captions of how the Hell's Gate Bridge was constructed and how the "new" Pennsylvania Station will look like, returning this New York terminal to some of the architectural magnificence intended by the great architects Mc Kim, Meade and White (designers of the original station).
If you like New York, especially for what was lost menially in this great city.. you will love this book.

The Wander Society - are you a member?

A whimsical exposition of an idea that has long been central to our philosophy... it is exciting to see how many beloved writers and naturalists from yesteryears were also "members" of the Wander Society (unbeknownst to them). My first impulse on receiving my copy was to buy more to have on hand to give to kindred spirits.

A fun book that is also a bit mysterious!

I love this book! I really like it's simplicity and her easy "how to make" projects. I keep it with me everywhere I go. I'm ordering some as Christmas presents for my "Wander" friends and family. If you love adventure in a low key way read and enjoy Keri Smith's The Wander Society.

I felt like I had finally found belonging in a group of ...

When I first received the book I was completely intrigued. I felt like I had finally found belonging in a group of like minded people where I had always seen myself as alone in my habits of wandering in nature and following my curiosity. I was also very intrigued by the unfolding of Keri's discovery of this secret group. My investigative nature kicked in and I could not stop asking questions about the origins of this mysterious society. I noticed that all of the drawings on the wander society website looked familiarly like Keri's past instruction sheets in her previous books. And then I researched the origins of the website. It was created in 2015. I felt the joy and curiosity drain from my face. This means that Keri created the website herself. I have to wonder if the whole story is just that.. A story. While I still find companionship in the philosophy of the book I must admit I feel a sense of loss as well. Sure people have been packaging stories as truth for many years. But this one hit me harder than I wanted.
