About the Author
Kevin Neary has coauthored The Hidden Mickeys of Walt Disney World (2016) with his wife Susan and four Disney trivia books (1992 2000) with Dave Smith for The Walt Disney Company as well as two baseball books (Major League Dads: Baseball's Best Players Reflect on the Fathers Who Inspired Them to Love the Game, 2012, and Closer: Major League Players Reveal the Inside Pitch on Saving the Game, 2013) with Leigh A. Tobin for Running Press. Kevin has also written 715: Reflections of Hammerin' Hank & the Home Run that Made History (2015) for SkyhorsePublishing. His next baseball book will be The Manager: Rules of Engagement and will feature a collection of interviews and stories from fifty of the game's best managers over the past fifty years. Vanessa Hunt is a Walt Disney Imagineer and a lifelong Disney aficionado. Her education is in art history, and she is part of the group responsible for the more than 130,000 pieces of original artwork preserved in the Walt Disney Imagineering Art Library. She has been curator of several Imagineering exhibits featuring many of the works from the Art Library collection, and she has consulted for The Walt Disney Family Museum. Vanessa is also the coauthor of the wildly popular Poster Art of the Disney Parks from Disney Editions. She is currently designing a new book featuring the art of Disney Legend Marc Davis, and coauthoring an illustrated volume about the history of the Disney Monorail.

Not at all what you would expect - the title is misleading

I had very high hopes for this book. Based on the product description, I was expecting to get tons of actual park maps from 1955 to today. Instead, what you get is a hodgepodge of concept art renderings with very little explanation of what you're looking at. There are very few actual maps of the parks. While the concept art included is beautiful to look at, it's all very poorly organized. The book jumps around from park to park without any transition. Instead of placing things chronologically, or by individual park, everything is kind of just smashed together. There are different chapters, but the chapter titles don't mesh with what's actually in that chapter. It's just a poorly designed layout for the book. There is very little in the way of descriptions of what you're looking at or why. Also, the other obviously had a huge fascination with Tom Sawyer's Island because he includes more renderings of it than he does for some of the actual parks.

If you are looking for a book that contains all the park maps from all Disney parks from 1955 to today, this book is not for you. If you're looking for something to kill some time while you're on the toilet, this book might fit that bill. But, it would be an expensive toilet read.

Seriously, if I had paid the full $30 retail price, I'd be mad and sending the book right back to Amazon. There are a lot of really good books out there about a Disney park history. This is not one of them

Aerial Concept Art of the Disney Parks

If this book were called "Concept Art of the Disney Parks," it would be getting 5-stars across the board.

I was relieved to see that others had expected something different just like I had.

50% of the book is made of gorgeous, well-curated, glowing aerial concept art of Disney Parks – that special sort of concept art Disney artists do so well, showing just enough to romanticize the place while keeping the details soft. There's lush, beautiful artwork of Disneyland Paris seen from the sky; concept art of Hong Kong Disneyland's new mini-lands; everything in the book about New Fantasyland or Shanghai Disneyland is in the form of (beautiful, high quality) scans of famous (and readily available) concept art.

30% of the book is filled with one-off "novelty" maps, like the cartoon-ified, caricature map of Disney California Adventure produced solely to hang on construction walls during its rebirth; delicate, elegant "souvenir" maps of DisneySea meant to be purchased in a gift shop in large format.

A further 15% is populated by a lot (maybe too many) of the "in-universe" maps: the "map" of the Hundred Acre Wood that serves as the backdrop to the loading area in Tokyo's Hunny Hunt ride; the exaggerated cartoon "map" of your "sailing route" in DisneySea's Sinbad's Storybook Voyage; the "map" of Vulcania that hangs in the Nautilus' map room in Disneyland Paris' walkthrough attraction; the elegant map of the world in the ceiling of Tokyo's Teddy Roosevelt lounge. And while those are maps, and they are in Disney Parks, it feels as if they should be relegated to their own chapter, because they're not what you and I had in mind when we looked at this book.

You and I came here for what's squeezed into the remaining 5% of the book – Disney Parks guide maps... y'know... the ones your pick up at the turnstile on your way in (or, for many of us, on the way out). So many of us make a hobby of collecting these maps not just as souvenirs, but as works of art. We use them to trace parks' growth over time. And I suspect *most* people who pre-ordered this book a year in advance like I did were expecting it to be a comprehensive collection of those guide maps for each Disney Park through its history.

Chapter 1 - Disneyland Park
Chapter 2 - Magic Kingdom
Chapter 3 - Epcot
Chapter 4 - Tokyo DisneySea
...

What you and I were looking for was to trace these parks via their guide maps. Take DIsney California Adventure (would've been Chapter 8, by my count?). Sure, start off the chapter with some concept art and give me a history of the park's development. But then, I want the map – the guide map from the turnstile – that guests picked up in 2001. Then I want to turn the page and see the 2004 map and I want text to point out what's been added, subtracted, and changed at the park (and thus, to its map). Then I want to see 2007's. Then 2012's for the Grand Re-opening. Then today's. Right? I want to trace the parks' life through its guide map art. I suspect that's what you wanted, too.

Yes, this is a book worth having in your collection. But it's NOT what you imagine it will be. Text is very, very minimal (an opening page for each chronological chapter, then simple citations of artists and year for each map included in that decade+ period) and within the broad range of each chapter, you'll zoom indiscriminately from continent to continent. Pages 82 - 83, Tokyo Disneyland "fine art" souvenir map; 84 - 85, Blizzard Beach map; 86 - 87, Animal Kingdom aerial concept art; 88 - 89, Tom Sawyer Island Explorer's Map...

Is this book worth having in your collection? Yes. It's a fair price for a beautiful book of artwork. And *if* this book were called "Aerial Concept Art of the Disney Parks," people would've known what they were getting and this would be 5-stars across the board as a well-curated collection of art with minimal text. As it is, you and I came here for a collection of Disney Parks guide maps, and this is not that.

Some nice art with little substance. A missed opportunity.

On the positive side this book features a variety of different maps, from souvenir "fun maps" to concept art and advertising maps, covering all aspects of Disney parks, and even including some unexpected and easily overlooked items. But there is very little information given about the specific maps, which I would think a book devoted entirely to maps would provide.

For example, they included a Fortune Red pirate treasure map, which is great, but offers absolutely no explanation as to what "Fortune Red" is, what the map depicts or where you would find it in the park... even one sentence could have answered that. Same with the Magic Kingdom MSK maps, also included here without any explanation as to what MSK is or what these maps were used for (they were actually components for an in-park game). It's just, "Here's the MSK maps. The end."

Some other reviewers have mentioned the small dimensions of the book make it hard to appreciate the detail of the larger maps, and I agree... a slightly larger format would have alleviated much of that (no, the book would not have to be "map sized", LOL, just larger than the rather diminutive 11" x 12" that it is.)

Finally, this isn't clear from the item description photo, but the hardcover is actually split down the middle, and opens out left and right, gate-fold style. This means the pages are actually twice as wide as the left cover and hang over the edge as you flip through, which is kind of annoying.

I still am reluctantly recommending the book because there is some great artwork in here that I haven't seen in other books, but it could have been much, much better.

Pretty good coverage

This book gives good coverage of a broad range of topics. It gives technical details to various network threats, and countermeasures. The problem is the book is to short. It needs about 100 more pages with more detail on each topic.

Used book and yet looking like new

Great pricing for this used book. It was selling close to $100 brand new and I needed it for school. I really did not care how fallen apart the book could be, the price was just right and I just needed to stay up-to-date with the class lectures. Well it came in looking like new and I was happy to have bought this book from this seller.

One of the questions that some people might ask when looking for a travel guidebook will be, `will it include the sort of things that I like to do and see?"

Obviously that's a very subjective question...

I have an instinctive love of beautiful scenery and love exploring the countryside; the wilder the better. For most of my adult life I worked in Manchester and saw it change from being tired and run down to becoming one of the UK's most vibrant and beautiful cities; so I guess what I'm saying is that I love cities too. I enjoy wandering about art galleries, museums and gardens. However I equally enjoy messing about in theme parks, swimming in azure seas and chilling on beautiful beaches.

Being a foodie, eating is more than a necessity; it's a pleasurable hobby. However, although I positively salivate at a beautifully presented cordon bleu meal in a plush restaurant, or a simply cooked, but delicious fish straight from the fishermen's boat in a harbour-side restaurant, I wouldn't turn my nose up at a home made beefburger full of fresh herbs.

Sometimes I reckon you can't beat a fine wine in a stylish pavement café as the sun goes down... until I'm quaffing mojitos in a lively Cuban bar with pumping Latino music watching the beautiful people salsa sexily around me till the early hours.

At other times I revel in the thrill of the energetic fiestas which seem to take place every month with street parties filled with smiling people in traditional costume/fancy dress/DJs and cocktail dresses that go on till dawn. But then again it's hard to beat the wave of shared emotion felt when someone starts singing `Ave Maria' during traditional festivals, or brotherhoods in masked outfits silently march through the streets during Easter processions in La Laguna.

I could go on, but I suppose the point is this, if you're looking for a diverse guide to Tenerife and you enjoy any, some, or all of the above things I've mentioned, Going Native in Tenerife should be just the guidebook you're looking for.

Best to Go Native not naked

This book scores on two important levels as a take-along travel book. First it is short and pithy, so no tedious chapters of endless detail to wade through before you get to the hard stuff. It takes you straight into your surroundings. Second, it is written in a very friendly, conversational style. This makes it very accessible, like having a knowing friend alongside you pointing out the features as you stroll along. You can read this on the plane going over, then refer to the relevant pages when you're 'going native'. It's also an easy read on your tour coach or in the pavement cafe as you sip your cafe con leche. If you can't manage a personal Tour Guide this is a very affordable alternative. The next edition could manage a few more pictures. Why not submit yours. The author might be grateful. And you might become famous.

Do not buy this Kindle-edition

The text is good, but as a guide it is impossible to use. There is no navigating tools, no table of content to click and no index to click. I would not recommend this Kindle-edition to anyone. It is wasted money. There should be a "warning" in the presentation.

UPDATE ONE MONTH LATER: I warned about the Kindle-edition about this book. I bought the paperback-edition to be able to use index and jump back and forth in the book. This paperback-edition was also a great disappointment. The whole book looks like it is type set in the 60s. It is typically a selfpublished book with very bad design. It is, I am sorry to say, pure amateurism. So I have to warn about this edition too. Do not waste your money, the price is way too high, about $15 too much.

It is not only the design of the book that is bad. Although the book si well written, this reader is disturbed by the author's and contributor's descriptions about the natives of Tenerife - I will call it predujice against the gentle natives of Tenerife. One simple example is when they write about driving and drivers. They descibe them as reckless drivers. That is simply not true. The Tenerifeños are probably the most considerate drivers in Europe. It is the Scandinavians, Britons and Germans who are the reckless drivers in Tenerife, not the natives (of course every country has the testosterone filled youths as do Tenerife). I am from Scandinavia and spend three months each year in Tenerife; I speak from experience.

And the authors do not tell you about the real "native" places. For example they do not tell about the best fish restaurants in Tenerife, situated in the south in the small fishing village of San Miguel de Tajao (this IS a fishing village, they have their own fishing boats). You do not get more native in Tenerife then this small village. And they also do not mention restaurants like Casa Tómas, Garrafones and Rodeo (in the north) where the natives meet and eat very good food at reasonable prices - served with the wine from the restaurants's own vineyards. And they do not tell about the excellent winery in the south; Cumbres Abona where you can buy the best wines, especially the one called Flor de Chasna which is excellent with seafood - made at the winery. I suspect the authors have not been so much around Tenerife. They have probably just read other guide books and papers like Teneife News and Island Connecion, with some inspiration from the equaly bad book "More Ketchup than Salsa". That is sad.

Conclusion: Do not buy this book, either in paperback og in kindle. Both are made to make easy money for the authors. I am also an editor of books, and can spot amateurism when I see it.

some good information but poorly organized and difficult to navigate

Going Native had a few decent recommendations, but overall I found it very difficult to find anything in the book. The majority of the content is organized geographically, but there's no index so if i want to look up a particular city i've heard of, i first have to figure out where it is in the book (north, east, south, west ...sometimes a matter of interpretation!) which is frustrating. It seems like the book covers almost every city and town on the island. Seems like a good idea on the surface, but the end result is that most of the towns got only brief paragraph mentions, which meant after a couple of hours in a town you were out of options and had to drive to the next town before the book became helpful again.
