About the Author
Evelyn Anthony is the pen name of Evelyn Ward-Thomas, a female British author who began writing in 1949. She gained considerable success with her historical novels—two of which were selected for the American Literary Guild—before winning huge acclaim for her espionage thrillers. Her book, The Occupying Power, won the Yorkshire Post Fiction Prize, and her 1971 novel, The Tamarind Seed, was made into a film starring Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif. Anthony’s books have been translated into nineteen languages. She lives in Essex, England.

The Tamarind Seed

Very glad to see these books becoming available for kindle. A real blast from the past. Somewhat dated, and by no stretch of the imagination could this be considered a straight romance however there is "attraction" between Judith Fallow and the enigmatic Russian, Feodor Sverdlov.

There's plenty of intrigue, spies, and exotic locations to keep a reader interested. It did get a bit bogged down in the middle of the story but on the plus side the "spy/traitor" wasn't who I originally thought it would be. I'm a tad biased when it comes to these older romantic suspense/ thrillers.

I bought the book after seeing the movie starring Omar Sharif and Julie Andrews. The movie is fairly faithful
to the book, however, the book allows one to enter more deeply into the thoughts and motivation of the characters.
Also, the book leaves unanswered the main question of the plot. Quite clever.

Slowly paced, yet good ingredients of romance and intrigue!

Romance and intrigue are the ingredients in this book - and film - once famous, perhaps faded in the proverbial mists of time that deserves a new look.

Well written, carefully plotted, nevertheless I found the pace plodding though seasoned with enough suspense to make one read on – perhaps the question is: Do you care enough about these characters for the suspense to work on you, especially since the Cold War a time when this was published, is history.

Yet I think it is still an enticing read – well, why not? Romance and intrigue? A delicious mix!

About the Author
KEITH CUTHBERTSON is Professor of Finance at the Management School, Imperial College. He has been an advisor to the Bank of England and UK Treasury and a visitor at the Federal Reserve. He has held chairs at the University of Newcastle and City University Business School, as well as undertaking consultancy with financial institutions.
DIRK NITSCHE is a lecturer in Finance at the Management School, Imperial College. He is also a Visiting Lecturer at City university Business School.

Ideal Intro bk for a Financial Engineering/Risk Mgt course

This is probably the ideal introductory textbook for advanced undergrad or MBA/MSc Finance majors for their first Financial Engineering or Risk Management courses.
New students of these subjects would benefit more from reading this textbook than from reading the much more celebrated (whether deserving or not is up to debate) and yet much more expensive John Hull's classic 'Options, Futures, and other Derivatives', despite the fact that Hull's book is a favorite among many college professors (Hull's book was, incidentally, the textbook used in my MBA options and derivatives course)
There are many reasons that I feel this book represents good value and provides a smooth introduction into the world of financial engineering:
1. Comprehensive: All the major financial products and derivatives are thoroughly covered. Advanced topics such as Chooser options and real options are included as well.
2. Available computer/spreadsheet models: To supplement the excellent coverage in the textbook, the author have made available codes on his website for students to download and to further their self-study. The spreadsheets are professionally done and I found them very useful, either as learning tools or as template to develop more advanced models.
3. Clarity of exposition: The style is straightforward, avoiding unnecessary jargons. Yet the authors walk you through each step of the way using examples, graphs(plenty of them), fully developed equations, and tables.
4. Math and theoretical Rigor: This book does not lack mathematical rigor. Technical appendices are included as well, e.g. Ito's Lemma. If needed, relevant literature is quoted for the student to further his/her study.
5. Solid Value: this book can be had for less than fifty dollars. A bargain compared to many other finance books of similar caliber. Getting this book is like getting two for the price of one: both the financial engineering section and that of risk management could have been sold as two separate volumes.
With this book the authors have paved the way for the new students of FE and Risk management to explore these fascinating world. You will not regret the purchase.

30 Different Authors, 1 Gospel Hope

I greatly appreciate the many different voices and perspectives in this book. There are 30 different authors, writing 30 different essays, but they all are united in the hope that the gospel of Jesus can change our culture and our churches. I learned a lot from reading this, from learning the helpful concept of 'microagression' to learning a lot of the history behind both American society and my own denomination, the PCA, with chapters by Bobby Griffith and Greg Ward being particularly helpful. The chapters by Duke Kwon and Mike Khandjian particularly helped me understand why I need to join in corporate repentance for both my own sins of racial pride & prejudice and those of my covenant community. And I so appreciated being able to walk a mile in the shoes of my black brothers in chapters by Russ Whitfield, Lance Lewis, and Howard Brown. Highly recommended!

A Well- Organized, Important Work

Heal Us, Emmanuel is a series of essays, grouped by themes. Because the book is made up of such serious and sad stories of racism & injustice, I appreciated that I could read 1-2 essays at a time, put the book down and think about what I was reading, and then I could resume my reading- all without losing track of the larger story. I commend a couple of specific essays, especially if reading about race and the church is new to you: Alexander Jun's essay "Unintentional Racism" on microaggressions if you don't know what that word means and Bobby Griffith's "The Theology of Race in the South" for a helpful primer on how theology and culture shaped one another to bring the Church to where it is today. I appreciate the hours of work that must have gone into getting so many authors' work into a cohesive unit. Well done!

An incredibly important book!

I'm almost finished with "Heal Us, Emmanuel" and I find it to be very thought provoking and causing me to assess my own attitudes.

I would deny being a racist, have ranted about the term "white privilege", and have never knowingly treated someone of another background, race, or ethnicity poorly. In fact, as someone who grew up Jewish I've been on the receiving end of plenty ot hurt.

HOWEVER, after reading this book I find I must reassess. I recommend this book to everyone and have purchased additional copies to give to people I know.

Here's a test I think should make those of us who believe we're not complicit in any of this take another look - You're walking down the sidewalk at dusk and a group of late teen, early 20's white males are coming toward you. How do you react? You're walking down the same street at the same time and a groupl ot late teen, early 20's black males are coming toward you. How do you react? Be honest with yourself and perhaps you will find something to repent of.

Just my two cents.

About the Author
Deepak Malhotra is a Professor at Harvard Business School, where he teaches Negotiation courses to MBA and Executive students. Firstly, the book is really a 30 page book spread out to 60 pages by using double spaces and a huge font size.

I would give it 3 stars, if it was advertised as a simple, short fable. Instead, it's touted as a self help book. The entirety can be said in 1 sentence, and this book offers no advice outside of this sentence (follows):

Instead of focusing on how to win the existing game(s) that exist(s), in order to achieve success, try to take a step back and find a way to profit from the moves of everyone else playing the game(s).

Simple concept made overly complex

Ill sum up the whole book. Go after what makes you happy, change when you need to, and try to be the changing force. There now you don't need to read about a steroid ridden mouse who cant work out so he gets pissed and smashes through a wall.

Read this book in just over an hour. Interesting and unique perspective of what has become an old adage from "Who Moved My Cheese?" Even as a dabbler in LOA, I am a bit lost over the story of Zed in this book and will be pondering that for a bit. I get it the theory; just don't see how to exactly practice as presented. Thought-provoking, encouraging, inspiring - worth adding to any bookshelf.

About the Author
Dexter Filkins has been foreign correspondent in Afghanistan and Iraq for the New York Times since 2000. He was a member of the Iraq bureau from 2003 to 2006, a Nieman fellow at Harvard in 2006, and is currently a fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Kennedy School of Government. A Pulitzer Prize finalist for his work from Afghanistan in 2002, he has received numerous awards, including the George Polk awards for his coverage of the assault of Falluja in 2004, and an Overseas Press Club award.

Exceptional

Of the dozens of books written about the war in Iraq, along comes Dexter Filkins with a commentary on Iraq that blows the others away. Non-political and highly personal, Filkins goes after the day-to-day story that, through accumulation, delivers a report about the Iraqi citizenry over the years after the invasion. He captures it with style, wisdom and grace.

Americans have largely known the Iraqi war through political slants with a small degree of knowledge of the street. The author adds so much to the discourse. Who knew the depth that kidnapping played or how even going to the bathroom played with both American troops and the Iraqi people, disrupted as it was. This is a book of color and passion. I was particularly moved by a paragraph in which he relates how one would know if an Iraqi was killed by a Sunni or a Shia. The exceptional side of "The Forever War" is not only the presentation of the story but the narrative in which it is told.

Filkins has his own boots on the ground, grinding through Baghdad, Falluja and other hot spots. His book is one of remarkable courage under fire and serves to remind us of what our government simply didn't know about Iraq, or about which it didn't care. I highly recommend it.

Powerful and Moving

This will, I think, become the classic book of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. It is non-political and consists of multiple snapshots rangng over many years, not always in chronological sequence. These are Filkins's carefully selected memories of his life as a N.Y. Times reporter on the front lines, as well as his experiences on 9/11 at ground zero.

He makes no effort to "explain" the turmoil of the Middle East, but one puts the book down with a new understanding of some of the powerful and destructive forces at play. He is respectful of the U.S. military and his sketches of the bravery of the Americans fighting against bad odds, most of them only teenagers, is very moving.

Politics don't even intrude in the brief chapter on Ahmad Chalabi, it is rather a sketch on the personality of this complex and slippery player in the power struggles of the time.

I recommend this book as a companion to the excellent "Imperial Life in the Emerald City" which documents the appaling stupidity of U.S. policy in Iraq flowing down from the top. The "Forever War" balances that with the street smarts courage of our military. Still, Filkins would, I am sure, agree that imposing "democracy" by military force guarantees a forever war.

This is a powerful book, well and clearly written, by an experienced and compassionate observer.

Ernie Pyle would be proud of this book

I happened to be in New York when Mr. Filkins was giving a reading from this book at the Strand so I stopped by to listen to him read as well as answer questions about his years in Iraq and Afghanistan. This book is probably one of the few written about the wars which does not get involved in making judgments about whether these wars are anything but "forever."
Starting with his witnessing of Taliban "justice" in Kabul in 1998, nearly 20 years after Jimmy Carter decided to start the war in Afghanistan as a trap to lure the Soviets into invading the country and create a Soviet "Vietnam", Filkins shares with us the brutality of that war and the ravages it brought to Afghanistan over a couple of decades. He is able to capture the reasons that the Taliban were reluctantly viewed by the general population as a means to end the bloodshed and blackmail which had seen millions displaced, disfigured and dead over the years. Ironically, Filkins witnessed the amputations and executions in the former soccer stadium the same year that Zbigniew Brzezinski was giving his interview with a French magazine claiming that his advice to Carter to fund the mujahedeen and thus creating "a few stirred up Muslims" was worth the price if it meant the Soviets would end their occupation of his native Poland. Filkins witnessed firsthand just how "stirred up" they became, and how decades later, they are still "stirred up."
Filkins does not get into the "who started what and when" trap in this book, but does show that decisions have consequences and "The Forever War" started long before W even thought about running for president.
If you are looking for a book that points fingers and lays blame, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that shows the day-to-day reality of war, the deaths, the damage, the decisions, that people have to make in winning or surviving them, this is as good as it gets.
Filkins does devote a few pages of placing Iraq today into context with his observations in visiting the cemetery where Gertrude Bell is interred and her role in the creation of the country of Iraq after WWI, as well as his visit to the graveyard and memorial built to the memory of the 30,000 British soldiers who were members of the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force who paid the ultimate price in liberating the country that would become Iraq from the Ottomans during WWI.
As I told him after his reading, I am sure that Ernie Pyle is smiling down on him and his courageous return to unvarnished journalism without a political agenda.
