Swain is someone I've long admired in the heathen community. When I first set foot along this path Swain was already a noted elder among the greater heathen community. Though I do not use the Anglo-Saxon model, I have still found Swain's written work very informative and useful. Especially his writing on Theodism which has given me plenty of inspiration in researching my own tribal roots among the Swedes. What I really like about the book is the rites he has included, I've noticed over the years that writing and working rites is one of the stumbling blocks many people face when setting out to actually do something about being heathen. The rites Swain has included in the book are simple enough anyone can do them, they are beautifully written, very poetic, and will certainly accomplish their intended purpose in honoring the gods and ancestors, as well as being instructive for the individual using them and I believe will inspire them to craft their own rites as well. All in all, this might be Swain's finest book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Pick up a copy you'll be glad you did. (Jeff Wolf)

Great resource for beginners

There have been many books written on Norse paganism, but not so many focusing on the Anglo-Saxon tradition, especially for the beginner. This book is a much needed resource and serves as a very thorough introductory text including many ways to incorporate Heathen rituals into contemporary spiritual life. The book is a good overall synopsis and a very readable, informative and easy to understand, but never dumbed-down. The book is well-written and provides new insights for the beginner's search. There is a good glossary of unfamiliar terms as well a suggested reading list to take things to the next level.

Even if you are an experienced member of the Heathen community pass this one onto others. It could be a great learning and teaching tool. That is what I will be using it for!

All I can do is echo the previous two reviewers of this fine book. A book theat presents the "Anglo-Saxon" path in a understandable way. I have the authors three previous books which are equally well done. If you are a beginner on the path or want to review the basics, this is the book to pick up.

As noted, the illustrations in this 9 by 12 inch book are mostly black and white. They come from several sources but most importantly from Drawings by Frederic Remington, 1897, a book which sells on the collectors market for $700 to $1,000. Another major source was Harper's Weekly. As Remington died in 1909 over 100 years have passed since his death placing his drawings in the public domain in most jurisdictions. This book offers high quality reproductions, and, particularly if purchased used, is a bargain. It offers good value at full price. Many of the images depict scenes from the Indian Wars in the west as well as many other realistic and imagined scenes from Western history.

About the Author

Parvis Emad is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at DePaul University and the founding co-editor (with Kenneth Maly) of Heidegger Studies. Also with Maly, he has translated Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit by Martin Heidegger and Encounters and Dialogues with Martin Heidegger by Heinrich Wiegand Petzet.

Kenneth Maly is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and co-editor (with John Sallis) of Heraclitean Fragments. With Parvis Emad he is currently translating Beiträge zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis) by Martin Heidegger.

Kantbuch before the fact

A lecture course that eventually became the famous Kantbuch, Heidegger demonstrates his remarkable capacity to think in complete sentences. The reading of Kant is decidedly Aristotlizing, with the priority of the imagination (phantasia) over reason (nous) or sense (aisthesis), and the priority of imagination cannot be separated from the priority of time, the gift which is self giving (or in Kant, self-affection: masturbation). The most clever thing that H does, and which he refrains from in the Kantbuch, is to turn the categories (quantity, quality, modality, and something else) into emanations of past, present, future. H reads modern philosophy as the triumph of the imagination, and that is no clearer than in Kant, but for Heidegger, the future possesses a priority, and the future is "image-poor." The connection of imagination with manipulation (and potentiality) leads some (like Sartre) to identify imagination with negativity, but H wants no part of this "humanism." Imagination and time may possess a priority that Kant "recoils" from, but H demonstrates the reductio in Kant's argument not to valorize imagination but ironically to resuscitate aisthesis, or the potentia passiva, the ability or power to receive, to listen intently, or just to listen.

A Heartfelt Plea for Rethinking Public Education

If you are already a fan of Mike Rose's earlier books (Lives on the Boundary, Possible Lives, The Mind at Work), you will love this exquisite book of essays that revisits themes from his earlier writing, and yet pulls them together in a fresh and highly accessible way. If you have not yet read Rose's earlier work, this is a wonderful introduction. The civil rights leader Robert Moses once said of education that it is the civil rights agenda of our new cultural and economic times. What Rose poignantly argues in this book is that we have fallen shamefully short of achieving this new civil rights agenda: educational equality in public schools across America. This is not just in spite of the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act, the bill that was intended to equalize education and help all students succeed. It is in part because of NCLB, with its unintended effect of narrowing the language and curriculum of public education. We have lost our way, argues Rose throughout this book. We have lost the fullness of public school teaching that focuses on critical and imaginative thinking, and that makes room for the rich diversity of American cultural life and thought. It is easy to offer a critique that tells us where we have gone astray, but Rose takes things one important step further in this collection. He shows through story and his own lyrical style of essayist commentary how things would look if they were different. What readers will find in this small but incredibly important book is a vision for public education that takes us beyond reductive dichotomies and narrow ways of thinking and acting. This is an important moment for public education in America, and Rose's voice is a critical one for helping us creatively rethink how education can become truly democratic.

Towards a more "egalitarian philosophy of education"

What is the purpose of schooling in a democracy? Through the masterful blending of public policy debates with personal and ethnographic narrative, "Why School?" refocuses our collective attention on this fundamental question. In this powerful collection of essays, Mike Rose carefully explicates the central issues that characterize educational discourse in the United States: standards, accountability, remediation, intelligence, work and equity. But what makes this book special is the way he does it. Rose's treatment of each of these issues - his thoughtful disentangling of political rhetoric to articulate the essential questions we ought to be thinking about - reflects and offers the kind of "fresh language" he urges us to join him in creating. What does opportunity look and feel like? What is the value of a standard or assessment and how can we re-organize learning so that these become tools rather than rigid ends? How can we rethink oversimplified dichotomies (hand vs. mind, academic vs. everyday, policy vs. practice) in the service of a more "egalitarian philosophy of education?" While questioning narrow, purely economic discussions of schooling, Rose leaves no nuance or counterargument unexamined, building a compelling case for what we should be most concerned with: the social, cognitive, emotional and existential dimensions of human development, and the conditions that provide all students the opportunity to grow. ANYTHING by Alfred Edershem is going to be GREAT! Edersheim was a Jewish Christian with a wonderful background in Jewish history and customs. I grab everything II can get my hands on by this author! The language may be a little bit difficult for some modern readers, but work your way through it anyway. It's well woth it.
