Keith McCormick is an independent predictive analytics consultant, speaker, trainer, and author. Keith is the lead author of the IBM SPSS Modeler Cookbook. Jesus Salcedo is QueBIT's Director of Advanced Analytics Training and the former SPSS Curriculum Team Lead for IBM. Both have done extensive SPSS training. Aaron Poh is a business analyst supporting IT strategy, enterprise architecture, and analytics at Booz Allen Hamilton and serves as a director at the Institute for Supply Management–Northern Virginia.

Solid stuff from legit expert authors

First, let’s be clear about the subject of this book. It’s a primer on the product that is now officially called “IBM SPSS Statistics,” and which is usually known as just “SPSS” (and that’s what I’m going to call it for the rest of this review). Don’t confuse it, as many people do, with other “IBM SPSS” products.
Despite the name, this book isn’t all about statistics. A significant portion of the book discusses statistical analysis and how it is done with this particular software, but that’s not the primary focus.
The real subject of the book is the ins and outs of using the software. Statistical analysis is there, yes. And so are many other fundamental skills ranging from installing the software and navigating the graphic user interface to data manipulation to programming and automation. These skills are neglected by most people who pick up the product on their own, and that’s a shame, because if you don’t know this stuff you can waste a heap of time, and get a lot less than the full value of SPSS.
Let me explain where I’m coming from. I was an employee of SPSS (the company) for 13 years, where I taught both basic and advanced SPSS classes (among other things). I’ve written books on statistics and data mining, and loads of training and marketing materials for SPSS (the product). And I’ve read a lot, and I mean a LOT, of books on this subject.
The title says “3rd edition,” but this is not a rehash of earlier editions. It’s a fresh new book, with new and expert authors. I can vouch for the credentials of the primary authors, Keith McCormick and Jesus Salcedo. Keith McCormick has been an SPSS consultant and trainer for more than a decade. He’s the primary author of “IBM SPSS Modeler Cookbook,” an advanced-level book about another IBM product line (I am one of the coauthors of that book). Jesus Salcedo leads analytics training at an IBM partner company, and he was a member of the IBM training staff, and also the staff of SPSS before it was acquired by IBM.
If you’ve never touched SPSS before, this is a good book to get you started. It starts from the very beginning, with software installation, and works methodically through the operational skills that give you control and efficiency. It explains the various windows and menus, the purpose of each and how to make the most of them. It covers the ins and outs of working with data in SPSS, and that includes many useful techniques that you will not find in spreadsheets or most other data analysis tools. It discusses use of SPSS syntax and other programming options that provide fine control and automation for your work.
The book is organized into 8 parts:
1. Getting Started with SPSS. This is the introduction. It tells about what SPSS is and how to install it, then walks through a sample statistical analysis example.
2. Getting Data in and out of SPSS. Not just data import and export, but also how data is defined in SPSS, and what that means to you.
3. Messing with Data in SPSS. Data transformation and manipulation. File manipulation. This section explains time and aggravation savers that many people miss.
4. Graphing Data. Explains graphics options from the menu and chart editor.
5. Analyzing Data. Covers the mechanics of techniques ranging from basic descriptive statistics (like sums and means) to testing hypotheses such as comparing means of groups (think chi-square, t-test and Analysis of Variance) to linear regression. The range of methods included is about the same as you’d find in an introductory college statistics class. Along with the step-by-step, the authors have included some explanatory material for each technique. It’s brief, solid stuff. (This section runs about 60 pages.)
6. Making SPSS Your Own. This goes into detail on controlling product settings. It also gives more depth on editing charts and tables and creating chart templates.
7. Programming SPSS with Command Syntax. How to get started using SPSS syntax, the programming language behind the menus.
8. The Part of Tens. Explains the family of add-on modules for SPSS, plus learning resources and inspiration for further developing your skills.
9. There’s a glossary, too.
You may not need every capability that is covered in this book immediately, but it’s important that you be aware of them. I have seen firsthand that people who are not introduced to the range of options available often end up wasting time and having a bad experience down the road.
This book covers about the same range of topics as SPSS clients got in a full seven-day sequence of live training. I’m a believer in live training, and encourage everyone to get good training if you can. But if you’re a good self-trainer and prefer to study on your own, can’t get to a class, or want a good reference to help you make the most of what you’ve learned in class, this is the book to get.

About the Author

Ellen K. Cromley is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington. Previously, she was Professor of Geography at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. Dr. Cromley’s research is primarily concerned with geographical patterns of health and disease, health facility location, and GIS design to support public health surveillance and intervention programs. She has published articles in geography, epidemiology, public health, and health services journals. Sara L. McLafferty is Professor of Geography at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In her research she explores the use of spatial statistical methods and GIS for understanding health and social issues in cities, as well as gender and racial disparities in geographical access to services and employment opportunities. Dr. McLafferty has published articles in geography, epidemiology, and urban studies journals and is an Associate Editor of the journal Health and Place.

This book offers a presentation of the special theory of relativity that is mathematically rigorous and yet spells out in considerable detail the physical significance of the mathematics. It treats, in addition to the usual menu of topics one is accustomed to finding in introductions to special relativity, a wide variety of results of more contemporary origin. These include Zeeman’s characterization of the causal automorphisms of Minkowski spacetime, the Penrose theorem on the apparent shape of a relativistically moving sphere, a detailed introduction to the theory of spinors, a Petrov-type classification of electromagnetic fields in both tensor and spinor form, a topology for Minkowski spacetime whose homeomorphism group is essentially the Lorentz group, and a careful discussion of Dirac’s famous Scissors Problem and its relation to the notion of a two-valued representation of the Lorentz group. This second edition includes a new chapter on the de Sitter universe which is intended to serve two purposes. The first is to provide a gentle prologue to the steps one must take to move beyond special relativity and adapt to the presence of gravitational fields that cannot be considered negligible. The second is to understand some of the basic features of a model of the empty universe that differs markedly from Minkowski spacetime, but may be recommended by recent astronomical observations suggesting that the expansion of our own universe is accelerating rather than slowing down. The treatment presumes only a knowledge of linear algebra in the first three chapters, a bit of real analysis in the fourth and, in two appendices, some elementary point-set topology. The first edition of the book received the 1993 CHOICE award for Outstanding Academic Title. Special Relativity for the graduate student.

This book is NOT for the pop science buff or the novice with little understanding of Special Relativity.

This book is designed for graduate level students in mathematics or physics who want a deeper understanding of Minkowski space. It presupposes a solid foundation in SR.

Having said this, the book is phenomenal. It brings out startling relationship between mathematics and physics explaining esoteric phenomena in SR.

For example:

1) The author shows how Lorentz transformations can be realized as fractional linear transformations of the Riemann sphere. By doing so we can use the full power of complex analysis to derive far reaching results. One property of such tranforms is that they map circles to circles thus explaining why an observer at rest who sees a circle ( say lit by lights ) will also see a circle, NOT ellipse from length contraction, when he moves relative to the circle.

2) Using a simple example ( scissors, chair and rubber band ) the author shows how a 360 degree rotation may not leave a system in the same state requiring the need of a new mathematical object ( spinor ) to describe this transformation.

3) The author clearly develops the mathematics of spinors. In fact this is the best introduction to spinors I have read. He develops the notion of spin vectors and realizes spinors as multi-linear functionals with inputs as spin vectors, their duals, their conjugate, and the conjugate duals. He then lays out the transformation properties of the spinors and shows that certain spinors have exactly the transformation properties needed to model particles with spin.

4) There is a great section on the relationship of SL (2,C) to the lorentz group. The author shows how Minkowski space can be represented by certain combinations of 2x2 complex matrices and shows how SL ( 2,C) can then operate on these. This operation is actually equivalent to a lorentz transformation thus giving a mapping between the two groups. He then shows that we can easily analyze SL (2,C) by breaking it down into irreducible representations ( which are known ) and that to each of these representations there exist a unique representation of the Lorentz group ( provided certain conditions are imposed ). If that condition is not met the representation leads to the all familiar 2-valued representation of the Lorentz group one hears so much about. Thus by studying SL ( 2,C ) which we know alot about we can represent the Lorentz group which is generally harder to study but of the most relevance in physics.

The books is filled with such insights and I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to understand particle physics or relativity.

Fascinating but not for the general reader

Starting with a quick overview of certain structures from linear algebra (bilinear forms) the book moves to discussing Minkowski spacetime. Unfortunately for many, the text is highly esoteric without even a single descriptive section that doesn't make use of some fairly advanced mathematics.

The level of mathematical maturity required is comparable to a fourth year mathematics major at any decent university. The relationship between the mathematics involved and the special theory of relativity is fully explained.

A solid introduction to special relativity for the earnest mathematician.

because of the numerous exercises which contain many
of the key points. More worked out examples would
make it more informative to read (without pencil and
paper at hand) as on buses or airplanes.

Superlative insight into this superlative combat unit

I had seen a documentary or two over the decades about the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) but I never fully appreciated their contributions to the enhancement and furtherance of the Special Air Service (SAS) and Special Boat Service! I also had no real appreciation for their efforts in Albania and Yugoslavia! Even more remarkably, much of this was accomplished by New Zealanders and Rhodesians. The author writes this book from a "memoirs" perspective and does a very good job. Anyone who fails to look up to the LRDG as equals to the SAS or SBS within their mission set fails to appreciate just what the LRDG did for the British in WW II. Also, any US Special Forces student needing to better gain an appreciation for school exercise "Robin Sage" needs to read the latter half of this book...very clear and unmistakable linkage to what the LRDG went through in Yugoslavia and Albania. The one obvious shortcoming was a lack of maps! Well written biography

This is a fascinating read, written as it is by a former LRDG patrol leader. Even though it is in the shape of a chronological unit story (rather than a more theoretically induced analysis) it is a must read for anyone interested in early special operations forces and the LRDG. Contains information about cooperation between the LRDG and the SAS. Recommended.

Warmth is the best term to describe the collection of remembrances of Grandma. I am more inclined toward nonfiction, which I read fairly quickly. Fiction often has so many extra words adding color and texture that writers like Joyce Carol Oats and T.C. Boyle, find me requesting they get to the point. I’ve pretty much concluded that some readers must like the way their eyes feel bouncing from word to word. I guess it is the act of reading that enthralls them. But, for me, generally, all I’m after is meaning. If I could read with eyes closed I’d probably be happy. Reading NANA, however, was a different story for me. I brought the book close to my face, to my eyes. I could not skip words or default to the general theory that “everybody knows”. It took me a long time to read because the reading was so personal and so revealing. Sure, I compared these disparate grandmas with the one great grandma that I lost when I was ten years old. I was shocked that so many people remembered their grandmother’s scent. I can still get a whiff of it now almost 60 years later.

Dear Nana is a book that we all can relate to. Women and men will enjoy reading the memoirs of the many talented writers that make up this book. It describes grandmothers, who are referred to, by a variety of names. These various memoirs depict grandmothers from all walks of life who made an impact on their grandchildren. They come in different sizes, shapes, and ethnic backgrounds but the one trait that ties them all together is the deep impression they have made on their grandchildren. These grandmothers have given of themselves and instilled their influence on their grandchildren for future generations.

A wonderful trip down memory lane!!

For a lot of us, we have extremely fond memories of our grandmothers. And this book takes the lot of us down memory lane. The stories come from all walks of life so it's interesting to read the different cultures, beliefs and customs that people around the world share. The story that stood out to me the most was Safiullah Rafai, a boy who wrote the story at a very young age. A worthwhile read for those who love their nanas!!
