Since its publication in 1989, each edition has strived to present a cohesive presentation of power electronics fundamentals for applications and design in the power range where there is demand in industry for power electronic engineers. A CD-ROM has been added to this edition, which readers will find useful in the exploration of power electronics and use of this text. The CD-ROM contains:
* A large number of new end-of-chapter problems with varying degrees of difficulty.
* PSpice(r) -based simulation examples to illustrate basic concepts and help in the design of converters. PSpice(r) is an ideal simulation tool for this purpose.
* A newly developed magnetic component design program. This program is extremely useful in showing design trade-offs, for example, the influence of switching frequency on the size of inductors and transformers.
* PowerPoint-based slides for all chapters that help summarize topics throughout the text.

About the Author
Ned Mohan is the Oscar A. Schott Professor of Power Electronics at the University of Minnesota, He has numerous patents and publications in this field. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Tore M. Undeland is a professor in Power Electronics in the Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. He is also a scientific advisor to the SINTEF Energy Research.

William P. Robbins is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, he was a research engineer at the Boeing Company.

Not a great book. Depending on the circuit, there may be two ways it can operate. In detail, it will show you how to solve it for one way but the other way it leaves you hanging. There has to be a better book.

Very good survey, but not exactly what I was looking for

This is a great survey of power electronics for someone with a modest electrical engineering background. It presents terminology, hardware, circuits and analysis in an approachable and well organized way. After reading it, someone with little prior experience can have a clear sense of what the field is about, what devices are available, and what technology is appropriate for specific power and voltage levels.

That said, as another reviewer pointed out, the book is a little light on math and detailed circuit topology. Erickson and Maksimovic was a much better fit for my needs.

Great book, info you can't just get anywhere. This book has 1.5 line spacing is the only thing that bothers me--it could've been a more compact size (one star off for that). However, if you are a die-hard note-taker, it would be great for that. The author is shieldoftheson on utube and has some fantastic sermons on there. Just know the writing style is exactly the same as how he speaks and I think this is his first book. Considering all that, a really large accomplishment in my eyes.

I read the book from cover to cover and there is no waste in it.
There are no other authors explaining the level of details that Michael present in his book.
It is an amazing book and I can recommend it for those interested in the life of Enoch and on an insight on an antediluvian world

About the Author

Greg Whyte, PhD, FACSM, is a professor of applied sport and exercise science at Liverpool John Moores University in London. As one of British sport's foremost research scientists, Whyte has worked as a consultant physiologist in a large number of Olympic and professional sports and is currently the science consultant for England FA (World Cup 2010), the Commonwealth Games Committee for England (Delhi 2010), and British Rowing. From 2001 to 2004, Whyte served as the director of research for the British Olympic Association based at the Olympic Medical Institute, where he established the Centre for Sports Cardiology, which is dedicated to the investigation and treatment of sport-related cardiac issues. Whyte is now the director of the Centre for Sports Cardiology at the Centre for Health and Human Performance.

A former international modern pentathlete, Whyte competed in two Olympic Games and won European bronze and World Championship silver medals. He studied for his BSc (hons) at Brunel University, completed his MSc in human performance at Frostburg State University in the United States, and completed his PhD at St. George’s Hospital Medical School and the University of Wolverhampton, where he was research coordinator. Whyte is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM) and was chairman of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) from 1999 to 2009.

Sanjay Sharma, BSc (Hons), MD, FRCP (UK), FESC, was appointed consultant cardiologist and physician at University Hospital Lewisham and honorary senior lecturer in cardiology at Kings College Hospital London in 2001. In 2006 he took up the post of director of heart muscle diseases at Kings College in London and became professor of cardiology at St George’s University of London in 2009. Sharma is medical director for Virgin London Marathon, consultant cardiologist for the CRY sports cardiology clinic at St George’s Hospital, and cardiologist for the English Institute of Sport, the British Rugby League, and the British Lawn Tennis Association.

Sharma’s interests include cardiovascular adaptation in athletes, sudden cardiac death in the young, and heart muscle diseases, for which he has an international reputation and has published over 100 scientific articles, including original papers in highly rated peer-reviewed journals. Sharma was awarded the status of fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and elected as a nucleus member of the Sport Cardiology section of the European Association of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Rehabilitation in 2008. Sharma leads the CRY screening program, which is the largest of its kind in the UK. Sharma has an active interest in medical education and is the lead tutor for the international teaching faculty for the Royal College of Physicians.

Knowing what's going on inside the body during exercise is a critical component of training. Many decades ago, the late Bruce Lee monitored his bodily functions in various ways while training. He, like other elite athletes, knew that it helps them perform at peak levels.

In this book, the reader is guided from theory to applied interpretation of normal and abnormal ECG traces.

"Exertion-related symptoms are the primary indication for exercise testing; however, it is also valuable in the assessment of functional and cardiorespiratory capacity, disease severity and prognosis, and pre- and postdischarge testing."

We've heard about athletes in the prime of their lives and careers collapsing while playing their sport and dying of an arrhythmia. From the book we read, "Exercise-induced arrhythmias can be determined by answering . . . questions to those posed when evaluating an ECG at rest: What is the atrial rhythm? What is the ventricular rhythm? Is the AV conduction normal? Are there any unusual complexes? Is the rhythm dangerous?"

The book is a reference for students and practitioners who work with exercise electrocardiograms (ECGs) and should be must-reading. The text is based on the authors' clinical experience, published research, and over a decade of dedicated study on the interpretation of ECGs from clinical patients to elite athletes while at rest and during exercise.

Extremely useful Business Guide

I was immediately drawn in to this book by the frank and engaging style of the author. Ms. Watson expects the reader to be an adult thinker. She does not spoon feed answers, but rather gets us to look at ourselves clearly and take ownership of our careers and successes.

Ms Watson's approach in her book is both intellectual and practical. She guides the reader through a series of steps to analyzing their own style, to thinking through their own goals, then looking at the major inhibitors to reaching those goals. The approach really works when she breaks down basic attitudes and habits and then explains how to reframe each in the most positive way. I found myself thinking both of how I respond to the questions and points today, how I used to respond, and comparing to understand both my growth and the roots of the changes in those responses.

The most important and lasting things about this book are the tools Ms. Watson provides to taking control of our own success. I had no formal exposure to NLP prior to reading this book, and I was very pleasantly surprised at how the logic could be explained and assimilated so well through my own efforts as a reader....and Ms. Watson's great skills as a communicator. This is a book I'll keep as a reference if I find myself getting stale or "stuck" in the future.

I highly recommend this book to people at ANY point in their career, and particularly during such difficult working environments as we have now.

From baby steps to Giant Steps!

If you are an intermediate jazz guitarist who has put off attempting to learn how to improvise on Coltrane's masterpiece, Giant Steps, and its progeny, for fear of its difficulty, put it off no longer!

Wolf Marshall has succeeded in breaking this complex tune genre down into its constituant parts, so it can be approached in a manageable way.

He goes beyond other authors' approaches, which usually consist mainly of manipulating the 1235 pattern over the changes. Marshall starts with this, but adds further melodic and rhythmic considerations that are sorely missing from other works on the subject.

Of course, writing for guitarists, Marshall caters to our special needs and challenges, unappreciated by other instrumentalists, making this work an indispensable addition to the aspiring jazz guitarist's library.

A way to make the complicated simpler

Having gone through this book page by page, I could not believe the idiotic and moronic review that was written by one of the obviously more amateur guitarists who decided to insultingly add his uneducated 1-cents in. Honestly, this is the most well researched and applied method on learning how to play the "Giant Steps" chord progression on the guitar to date. As he does in all of his books, Mr. Marshall has presented an in-depth guitaristic point of view on this important jazz standard. The history of the jazz language and the role it has played in every master jazz musician's music including John Coltrane's is pointed out in the book by Mr. Marshall, and he shows us that in the examples and explanations as applied to "Giant Steps". Many of the examples are from Coltrane's solo itself. One thing that the other "reviewer" seems to have overlooked because he was expecting a transcription of the complete solo in tablature. Seriously?? There's at least TEN Coltrane transcription books with that solo already! If you know how to read music on the guitar, you wont need it in tab. But, if you want to learn how to improvise over this song on your own, you will have to move past trying to copy only Coltrane's solo. For that, you will need the concepts, techniques, fingerings, and rhythmic variations that Mr. Marshall has so carefully put together. That's what makes the negative review all the more stupid, because the writer either did not go through the book enough to even see the historic information coming from other jazz masters, OR he just plainly doesn't know or understand what hell he's talking about. By the looks of his insulting review, I would strongly say it's the latter. The fact that Mr. Marshall can tie the jazz language from Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Joe Pass, Clifford Brown, Wes Montgomery, Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, and Pat Martino into "Giant Steps" is amazing and demonstrates how timeless the jazz language is. This book will be a must-have volume on breaking down and leaning this song for jazz guitarists for many years to come. However, it would be wasted on idiots and morons who don't even know what jazz is.

a giant help for all guitarist & serious musicians

I found this book to be full of lots of great ideas; especially when you apply several different fingerings to the lines. If you are a reader this book makes for great sight reading and illustrates an up and down the neck concept of playing guitar. That concept is employed by all of the great players of the instrument: Pass, Montgomery, etc.,
