Hybrid Modernities: Architecture and Representation at the 1931 Colonial Exposition, Paris (MIT Press), by Patricia A. Morton

The 1931 International Colonial Exposition in Paris was a demonstration of French colonial policy, colonial architecture and urban planning, and the scientific and philosophical theories that justified colonialism. The Exposition displayed the people, material culture, raw materials, manufactured goods, and arts of the global colonial empires. Yet the event gave a contradictory message of the colonies as the "Orient" -- the site of rampant sensuality, decadence, and irrationality -- and as the laboratory of Western rationality. In Hybrid Modernities, Patricia Morton shows how the Exposition failed to keep colonialism's two spheres separate, instead creating hybrids of French and native culture. At the Exposition, French pavilions demonstrated Europe's sophistication in art deco style, while the colonial pavilions were "authentic" native environments for displaying indigenous peoples and artifacts from the colonies. The authenticity of these pavilions' exteriors was contradicted by vaguely exotic interiors filled with didactic exhibition stands and dioramas. Intended to maintain a segregation of colonized and colonizer, the colonial pavilions instead were mixtures of European and native architecture.Anticolonial resistance erupted around the Exposition in the form of protests, anticolonial tracts, and a countercolonial exposition produced by the Surrealists. Thus the Exposition occupied a "middle region" of experience where the norms, rules, and systems of French colonialism both emerged and broke down, unsustainable because of their internal contradictions. As Morton shows, the effort to segregate France and her colonies failed, both at the Colonial Exposition and in greater France, because it was constantly undermined by the hybrids that modern colonialism itself produced.

Review

In Hybrid Modernities Professor Patricia Morton combines architectural history and postcolonial theory in a complex, richly nuanced account of that ever-fascinating spectacle, the 1931 Colonial Exposition in Paris. The book adds a new dimension to the story of Greater France, and is must reading for all those interested in imperial encounters and their legacies for the modern world.

High Point of the French Colonial Project
By Marco Antonio Abarca
The French reconciled the ideals of "Liberte, Egalite and Fraternite" with the harsh reality of colonialism by cloaking their endeavor in the terms of the "Mission Civilisatrice". They believed that through conquest, they were assisting less developed people by exposing them to French Civilization, the highest manefestation of Western Civilization. For this mission to be sucessful, the Governement understood the importance of selling this "noble" idea to the French people. In 1931, the Governement held the International Colonial Exposition in Paris. The Exposition was to be a demonstration of superior French ability in the areas of administration, architecture, urban planning and scientific knowledge. The Exposition was a complete success. During its six month run, over 30 million tickets were sold to the Exposition. This Exposition was the high point of French Colonialism. At the time, nobody knew that within thirty years, the French Colonial Empire would come crashing down.

"Hybrid Modernities" is a well written and lavishly illustrated study of the 1931 Exposition. Patricia Morton masterfully deconstructs the political purpose of the Exposition. With an art historian's careful eye, she shows how the architecture of the individual country pavillions was harnassed to serve the political and economic agenda of the French Government.

There are several target audiences for this book. "Hybrid Modernities" is a must for anyone interested in understanding France's troubled relationship with its colonies. The book will also be of interest to those studying the social history of Paris in the 1930's. Finally, this book will be enjoyed by students of French Art Deco Architecture. "Hybrid Modernities" is a thought provoking and throughly enjoyable read.

Review
"This book has just about everything an aspiring production manager will need to know about their role in the production process...A great book for anyone getting into behind the scenes filmmaking." - Black Filmmaker

"Film production management is quite a different affair in many respects to that of live shows; there is often more time available to spend planning, but equally there are often more people and more problems to manage. As such there is a lot more paperwork, and managing this efficiently is a key theme throughout this book.

Cleve is no novice at this type of work either, with over 80 films and various awards to his name you do get the feeling you are being guided by an experience hand." - Lighting & Sound, April 2007

Less Than What I Would Have Expected from Focal Press
By Kris C. Jones
I received a review copy for a film class that I help teach. In reading through the first few chapters, I noticed it has a rather casual, slapdash style that is all too common in many recent film how-to texts.

Focal Press has slipped in recent years, especially when it comes to their editions from overseas. It would seem that the cachet of having a foreign author is authority enough to justify the publication of a particular book.

I stopped reading when I came to the paragraph where the author states, to paraphrase, "Sometimes the screenwriter neglects to number his / her scenes due to laziness and the production manager has to do it for him." ( With no explanation of the "spec script" rules of format vs. "production scripts." It was at this point I became convinced of the author's lack of understanding of the production management process.

The best book out there for developing a shooting schedule.
By A Customer
I took Production Management in film school and this book blows away what we used as our textbook. It will definitely steer you to getting things done in a professional manner, whether it is managing locations or developing a shooting schedule. This is the one book you need to make sure everything runs smoothly.

This is an overview at best.
By Max Wycisk
I have purchased (and immediately returned, after thumbing through) this book, as after a couple of decades in the business I am now moving up to management. This book might be a useful read for a complete neophyte, or a student, perhaps it even "blows away" other school type textbooks on the subject as the previus reviewer suggested. For a professional, it is of little use. It touches on all subjects associated with production, but none of them are treated with sufficient depth. One thing is certain: you will definitely not be an well informed production manager if that is all you will ever read to get ready for that particular challenge, nor will you be ready to go out there, and pass yourself off as a pro..

A Worthwhile Book On Communications
By S. Peek
This book contains several good tips for improving communications. A lot of the information contained in it is also in other books. One concept that the author addresses that is a bit different is something that he calls 'free information,' which are things that others reveal without any effort on the listener's part. He has some interesting and valuable thoughts on that.

Another area that the author discusses is online presence. That section may have some value for those who are into a lot of online activities. Overall, I think it is likely a valuable book for those who struggle in the area of conversation. I mainly bought it for a relative who struggles with shyness, but I read it first to check it out.

It contains tips in several areas such as eye contact, body language, facial expressions, and active listening.

I recommend it for those who struggle with initiating conversations with others. It is probably a worthwhile read even for those who are already skillful in the communications area.

Great Help for an Introvert

I am an introvert and have trouble with small talk so I desperately needed some help in this area. This book was just the thing I needed. I used it to make flash cards of some conversation starters and extenders that I will memorize and plan to use.

Beware To Whom You Speak.
By Hoosier Hayseed
Where to start, about a subject as important to everyone as getting along with others, and making friends?
I bought this book and read it from cover to cover, and completely agree that everything he says makes nothing but sense, and is very helpful in enabling people to better negotiate the ins and outs of getting along in public discourse.
But there is one area that is directly related to this subject that neither he nor any other author who writes about making conversation, and thus, making friends, ever even alludes to.
They all pretend that there is a "level playing field," and everybody would be totally receptive to someone who was able to display all of the skills he mentions, about attracting others, and being an interesting conversation partner, etc.
But the fact is that the playing field is anything but level.
I have been accused of being extremely outgoing and friendly almost all of my life, and yet, I recently experienced a situation that absolutely dumbfounded me, as far as getting along with others, and I simply could not understand what in the world had happened.
Even someone such as myself, who had never knowingly felt hesitant to approach someone to try to befriend them, can be easily thrown for a loop, and their social capability completely undermined, simply by running into someone who doesn't respond to our efforts to be friendly and outgoing.
In essence, this is someone who simply can't talk. They can't respond to any comment or question you may ask of them, much beyond a yes or no.
I'm talking about a mental health issue that affects over 17 million American adults, which renders them unable to adequately interact with others in social conversation, which is called Social Anxiety, or Social Phobia, and is devastating, not only to those who have it, but also to anybody they come into contact with on a daily basis; namely, us, the general public.
The way it negatively affects somebody such as myself, is that inasmuch as the victims of this disorder appear for all the world to be completely normal, as to their general appearance and demeanor, so we just assume that they are normal, and proceed to attempt to talk to them, and expect to have our questions and comments reciprocated, as we feel it within our right to expect to happen.
But the fact is that we sometimes do not get the response we expect to get, and we immediately assume that we, ourselves, have some sort of problem.
We may get a response that is odd, or confused, or has no bearing on the question that we asked.
For some reason, our natural reaction is to think that we failed to adequately get our question across, and it's all our fault.
This is absolutely mind-boggling, in the effect it has on a normal person, because he invariably assumes that the problem is with himself, when in fact, he has no problem whatsoever. But he is convinced that he suddenly has developed this totally bewildering loss of ability to relate to other people, because he isn't getting any feedback to his efforts to even have a casual conversation. He can't seem to get a sensible answer to almost anything he says, and this begins to seriously take its toll on your mental health.
In my case, I found myself in a situation where I was literally surrounded by people with this condition, and had no idea of anything at all about it. I had joined the Men's Club at a golf course I played frequently, and this situation manifested itself shortly after I became involved. I didn't put two and two together right away, and did not realize that something was desperately amiss, and in fact, it took me several years to become aware that things just weren't right.
Just imagine the thoughts that would go through your mind if you suddenly found yourself in the midst of people who did not react to your questions or comments as if they understood what you were saying.
Of course, not everyone I ran into had this problem, but enough of them did, so that it was extremely confusing, and made me seriously concerned about my own mental condition.
Just to be clear: At the time it is happening, you are not aware that you are surrounded by people with mental problems. You don't figure this out until much later. All you are aware of is that you are having great difficulty in trying to deal with the people you encounter on a daily basis. You suspect that something has gone terribly wrong, but you aren't sure exactly what it is.
The thing that makes it so totally confusing is that not everyone you encounter reacts in this way. Some people act perfectly normally, and you wonder if the problem isn't actually with yourself.
But then, the next person you attempt to talk to, you get this strange, mysterious shroud of complete inability to penetrate through to their mind, to make your intentions known, and receive an acknowledging response, that would indicate that they understand what you are saying.
Their response is just strange, and completely unrelated to what you have just said.
No matter how "together" anyone may appear to be on the surface, it is incredible how completely you can be fooled, because they are experts at disguising the fact that they have any problem whatsoever.
In an effort to be brief, let me just say that there are many more people than you would ever imagine who simply cannot respond to any overture you might make to even try to talk to them. They literally can't put a sentence together of much more than 4 or 5 words, but we may very well be trying to chat them up, and not have a clue that there is any problem whatsoever. They can, however, usually say a few words, such as, "I don't know," and this tends to disguise the fact that this is pretty much all they can say.
This is a devastating state of affairs, especially for the ones afflicted with this condition, but it also causes almost complete confusion to anybody attempting to communicate with them.
And if I, who don't actually have any problem at all in communicating with people, can get so confused in trying to deal with someone who simply can't respond, how would you imagine that would affect someone who was actually trying to reach out and connect with others, and ran into one of these poor unfortunate souls?
And so, it is very often the case that all the rules are out the window, such as he describes in such great detail in this book, simply because we may very well be trying to have a conversation with someone who doesn't have a prayer of being able to talk to us, or to anybody else.
But the big, overwhelming obstacle is, first of all, to be made aware of this whole situation before we can even attempt to solve it, which puts us back to square one, of trying to learn how to meet and converse with and befriend others.
But the damage to our fragile psyche has been done - to the extent that we will no longer fully trust anybody we meet in the future, because we will be very much aware that we may be talking to someone who might never be able to understand, or respond, and that is extremely sad - for them, and for us.

Good book to start with VB but don't expect anything more !
By Raja Kakayadi
This book is BOTH good and bad ! This is DEFINITELY NOT for those people who are learning to program and need a VB.Net book that starts with explaining what the CPU and RAM are !
WHY GOOD - It is a great introduction to VB.Net for experienced programmers (experienced with VB6 or other programming language). The fundamentals of the language cosntruct (like the usual If clause, While loop etc.) are nicely condensed into one single chapter (Ch 3). Every chapter in Part-1 of the book explains one or more related language concepts in an easy to understand manner. Until the end of Part-1, all the code examples can be done using Notepad and compiled with the Visual Basic command line compiler (You do NOT even need Visual Studio.Net !). This is very good since it focuses on learning the language concepts rather than forcing you to get familiar with a strange IDE if you have not used Visual Studio before. Though there are some obvious errors in the code samples in Arrays and Strings chapter, they are no showstoppers in understanding the underlying concepts. Overall the part-1 of this book helps you to get upto speed on VB.Net very quickly. I did not read Part-3 yet, but I expect the treatment to be similar to Part-1, since Part-3 also deals with more theoritical aspects like Part-1.
WHY BAD - I read every page of this book until Part-1 but Part-2, where each chapter deals with things like Window forms/Ado.Net/Web forms (which themselves are separate books on the market), can be very intimidating as the author tries to cover a lot of ground in a very short space. For example, the code example in Chapter-13 for Windows forms, is gargantuan for a first time Winform program to be developed in Visual Studio.Net. Moreover, the code download from the author's website is also not of much use since the author had hidden some code to save space in the book and uploaded the same thing in his website also !
Overall, a good starting point to get into VB.Net but don't expect to learn everything about .Net with this book alone ! If you are already into VB.Net and looking to learn more about ADO.Net or Web forms, then this book is definitely NOT for you !

Great book for an overview of Visual Basic .Net
By Ajay Singh
I am an experienced VB6 programmer who was familiar with Object Oriented concepts since I have also programmed a little bit in C++ and Java. This book was perfect for me. It gave me a great overview of the language and reinforced the object oriented concepts.

I use this book as a reference for day to day programming but I also keep

handy for detailed explanations.

C# programmer learns by code sample
By Darrell Norton
Probably the best way to learn how to code in any language is to program with the examples in the book. I'm an experienced programmer in C#, but needed to get up to speed on VB.NET quick for some consulting work. I won a copy of Programming Visual Basic .NET 2nd ed. at a "WeProgram.NET" .NET user group meeting, and started reading it immediately. I skipped reading most of the explanations and went straight to the code (serious coders will understand this urge!). Even without reading much of the text, the code examples, while unimaginative, were selected well enough for me to pick up on the language, including its idiosyncrasies. I also like the fact that, for the text I did read, he explains why he is doing things a certain way. This would be really helpful for someone just learning to program or making the transition to .NET.
The only problem I really have with the examples is that it did not make clear what code was part of VisualBasic interop. Since I am now coding in two .NET languages, I don't want to have to remember CInt for one language and Convert.ToInt32 for another. I know this book is geared toward experienced VB6 programmers, but let's start doing things the .NET way. That's why it's here.

The Diversity Myth, by David O. Sacks, Peter Thiel

This is a powerful exploration of the debilitating impact that politically-correct “multiculturalism” has had upon higher education and academic freedom in the United States. In the name of diversity, many leading academic and cultural institutions are working to silence dissent and stifle intellectual life. This book exposes the real impact of multiculturalism on the institution most closely identified with the politically correct decline of higher education—Stanford University. Authored by two Stanford graduates, this book is a compelling insider’s tour of a world of speech codes, “dumbed-down” admissions standards and curricula, campus witch hunts, and anti-Western zealotry that masquerades as legitimate scholarly inquiry. Sacks and Thiel use numerous primary sources—the Stanford Daily, class readings, official university publications—to reveal a pattern of politicized classes, housing, budget priorities, and more. They trace the connections between such disparate trends as political correctness, the gender wars, Generation X nihilism, and culture wars, showing how these have played a role in shaping multiculturalism at institutions like Stanford. The authors convincingly show that multiculturalism is not about learning more; it is actually about learning less. They end their comprehensive study by detailing the changes necessary to reverse the tragic disintegration of American universities and restore true academic excellence.

Review

"This engaging saga of Stanford’s experiment in multiculturalism compellingly draws readers into the nightmare world of social engineering in practice."  —Elizabeth Fox-Geovese, professor of humanities, Emory University

" . . . . [A]uthors David Sacks and Peter Thiel show how Stanford University has incorporated the multicultural agenda into its undergraduate curriculum. The authors note that Stanford’s undergraduates can now get credit for such courses as ‘Creation/Procreation,’ which looks into ‘the gendered aspects of cosmological or religious systems,’ and ’Gender and Science,’ which purports to study science free of outdated assumptions. There is also a feminist studies course titled ‘How Tasty Were my French Sisters,’ about which I dare not speculate." —Wall Street Journal

"The Diversity Myth is a carefully documented and sensitively recorded historical account of the whole tragic saga, together with keen analysis of how all this could have happened. Future historians will find this book indispensable." —National Review

"A great read and an important story, this book will not just cause alarm about our educational institutions. It will inspire renewal." —William Kristol, editor and publisher, the Weekly Standard

"There is no higher duty for intellectuals than to denounce incipient totalitarianism wherever they observe it. Some of its symptoms are present at Stanford. In The Diversity Myth, two recent Stanford graduates document the situation there with a thoroughness and depth of analysis that should help stiffen the spine of university administrators." —RenĂ© N. T. Girard, Andrew B. Hammond Professor Emeritus of French Language, Literature, and Civilization, Stanford University

"If you want to find out what went wrong at Stanford University, read The Diversity Myth. There’s hardly a better source than this book for learning why multiculturalism on campus cannot work." —Linda L. Chavez, former Director, U. S. Commission on Civil Rights; Chairman, Center for Equal Opportunity

"Written by two recent Stanford Graduates, The Diversity Myth says the campus was divided, and the curriculum destroyed, by the multicultural movement. The authors, David O. Sacks and Peter A. Thiel, bemoan the offering of a history course in the spring of 1992 that focused entirely on black hair styles as a political and cultural statement . . . . Their book also discusses censorship, speech codes, and date rape." —the Chronicle of Higher Education

"Two former Stanford students, who lived through the 'culture wars' there, have written the most thorough and detailed account yet available of what 'multiculturalism' has meant at a major American university. With fascinating and often disheartening detail, The Diversity Myth will certainly lead readers to question what is happening today in American higher education." —Nathan Glazer, Professor of Education and Social Structure, Emeritus, Harvard University

"The Diversity Myth charges that ‘politicized’ classes and student activities have led to an ironic intolerance on campus—intolerance of all things Western." —Newsweek

Prescient and Overly Optimistic, But Contains All The Seeds Of Today's Horrors
By Adam Wayne
“The Diversity Myth” is a twenty-year-old book that nobody would remember, despite its many virtues, were it not for that its authors (and many of the young figures in its pages) have since then become highly-visible billionaires, and, in the case of Peter Thiel, prominent public intellectuals. None of them knew that then, though (presumably!), which makes the book even more interesting.

And everything old is new again. This book has, since I started writing this review, taken on new relevancy, with the puerile and ignorant, yet vicious, happenings at the University of Missouri, Dartmouth, Yale, Oberlin and other colleges last fall (2015). But let’s take the book as it is.

It’s possible, and instructive, to draw a line from William F. Buckley’s “God And Man At Yale,” published in 1951, through this book (published in 1999) to today. A descending line, showing the cratering of the American academy. The declined Yale of the late 1940s and early 1950s criticized by Buckley was a paragon of excellence compared to Stanford in the 1990s, much less compared to universities today.

As with any book that deals with political conflicts of the past, it is easy to see where the authors were right and where the authors were wrong. Unfortunately, they were right about the problem and wrong that it was on the way to being fixed. In fact, the problem of enforced leftist ideological conformity escaped the confines of Stanford and similar universities long ago, mutating and growing along the way, until now it not only suffocates all university discourse, but infects the entire nation’s discourse.

So, for example, a few months ago (November 2015), Obama’s Department of Justice announced that an Illinois school district would be punished by the federal government if they did not let a boy teenager with a mental illness, believing himself to be a girl, use the girl’s locker room with no restrictions. (Of course, they don’t call it a mental illness—they say he “identifies as a girl,” and therefore is one.) If, in 1995, someone had suggested that any of this could ever happen, he would have been treated as unbalanced at best. Similarly, Thiel and Sacks identified lots of problems with what in the 1990s was called multiculturalism, but they could not have seen the inversions of logic and reality to come.

Although the book’s title mentions “diversity,” that word did not have exactly the same meaning in 1995 as it does today, and Thiel and Sacks actually focus almost exclusively on “multiculturalism,” which was the watchword of the coercive Left in the 1990s. Today, “diversity” has taken center-stage. Today, diversity means, in the academic or workplace context, the granting of unearned rewards to the unqualified, under the guise of remedying past or present discrimination, bolstered by (always totally unsupported) claims that selecting awardees to favor chosen racial or other groups creates its own fantastic value, and of course has zero costs.

Shrill demands for diversity today are everywhere in life. But “Multiculturalism” today is an also-ran, essentially folded into diversity, perhaps because multiculturalism as practiced wasn’t multicultural at all, in the sense of wanting to create an environment of cultural openness, but rather a mechanism for creating a united, interlocking front to benefit the political causes of the Left (and to denigrate the superior accomplishments of the West, which denigration is a core political cause of Left). This is the core point of the book, and perhaps the term “multiculturalism” itself has largely disappeared because it lost its propaganda value when the immediate political goals were achieved and it became apparent that the term itself was a lie.

So what was the norm at Stanford is now the norm nationwide. And at universities now, what we have is a bizarre environment consisting of, among other dubious accomplishments of Western civilization, “trigger warnings,” demands to end “cultural appropriation”, tearing down Cecil Rhodes’s statue, and attempting to ban the wheat sheaves on the Harvard seal because the family they represent, who gave money to found Harvard, owned slaves.

Thiel’s and Sacks’s story and analysis is narrowly focused on Stanford. The first part of the book says what diversity/multiculturalism is not (or was not); the second says what it is (or was). In brief, what it is not is the West, which it defines itself in antithesis to. What it is a new, alien culture, based on (largely fake) victim status, but to its proponents the New Jerusalem. (Like all ideological leftist movements, diversity/multiculturalism is largely a religion substitute, in which the proponents achieve redemption and transcendence through their rituals.)

Much of the book is taken up with a catalog of anecdotal horrors (many of which seem mild by comparison to today’s behavior), organized by topic. Apparently some people think this undercuts the probative value of the book—looking at other reviews, accusations of cherry-picking seem pretty common. But anecdotes buttressed by statements and actions by all those in power supporting the behavior in the anecdotes is pretty much the only way to prove behavior. Those who suggest that the anecdotes give a false picture seem unlikely to be convinced by any evidence.

There are quite a few funny lines in the book. Noting the attack by a legal “scholar” on the West, exalting native Hawaiian culture as superior because there was “no money, no idea or practice of surplus appropriation,” Thiel and Sacks note that “Only Western societies have a problem with the exploitation of surplus value because such societies are the only ones that produce much surplus value to be exploited. Digging for taro roots and fishing for seafood [activities praised by the speaker] are quite different from the kind of work one imagines people do at the Center for Hawaiian Studies—a center whose very existence requires more surplus value than Native Hawaiian culture ever generated.” Ha ha. Similarly, they explicitly compare the multiculture to primitive societies, “with its hunger fasts, expulsions and ritual scapegoatings.” And there are also keen insights. “Multicultural victimology is so powerful because it taps into two base emotions that are not often found together—self-pity and self-importance.”

Although the authors don’t mention it, perhaps the best lens for evaluating the inception and metastasizing of diversity/multiculturalism is the “repressive tolerance” of Herbert Marcuse, a leading member of the poisonous Frankfurt School (composed of German refugees who created the philosophical backbone of the New Left, which is now dominant). Marcuse’s 1965 polemic against freedom, contained in the book “A Critique Of Pure Tolerance,” introduced the Orwellian idea that real tolerance consisted of intolerance. Or, as Wikipedia summarizes the idea, “Revolutionary minorities hold the truth and the majority has to be liberated from error by being re-educated in the truth by this minority. The revolutionary minority are entitled, Marcuse claims, to suppress rival and harmful opinions.”

The Marcusian lens explains WHY proponents of diversity/multiculturalism push their ideology. It has nothing to do with justice, the righting of wrongs, or the spread of forgotten or suppressed ideas. Instead, it is purely a mechanism for the totalitarian Left to gain total power, or as close to it as possible. The paths to this are several. The main theme is the self-admitted goal of total destruction of existing cultural values and their replacement by new values—being, as the authors note that Lenin said, “the engineers of souls.” And the immediate 1990s goal (successfully achieved nationwide in educational institutions) was the total replacement of the culture that is the common inheritance of the West with a mishmash of relativism, ignorance and idiocy. Too bad.

Thiel and Sacks point out that multiculturalism is the polar opposite of universalism. In a universalist approach to learning, the goal is to understand and communicate universal, objective truths that are available to everyone. In the multiculturalist approach, there are no universal truths, only ideas available only to victims, and subordinated in service to the achievement of power in a zero-sum game, using the all-purpose victim card.

Fortunately, perhaps, this suggests the solution to the cancer of diversity/multiculturalism—a return to universal principles, and in application of those principles, a focus on competition for excellence and productivity. (It’s a logical conclusion that members of ethnic groups that push diversity/multiculturalism do so in large part because they fear or know that they can’t compete with the ethnic groups, such as Asians, that don’t spend their time shrieking demands for more diversity.) But that solution is not likely in the current environment.

Thiel and Sacks end on an optimistic note, claiming that the “fall of Stanford” had begun. Unfortunately not—not only has the rot spread nationwide, and mutated into something much worse, but its effects are greater. This is because the role of universities today is no longer to educate (except in technical fields), but to act as filter for entrance into the ruling class, the “cognitive elite” of Charles Murray. The authors do seem to be correct in that Stanford, while still certainly narrowly and nastily ideologically conformist, is no longer a leader, and in fact has moved in a technocratic direction since the book was written—a direction that 1990s university leaders sneeringly denigrated as beneath the role of a great university.

Of course, even some liberals, such as Jonthan Haidt, have realized that this will end very badly. To his credit, Obama has also recently been speaking out, even if softly, about the pernicious effects of the more extreme versions of diversity/multiculturalism. (Of course, becoming more extreme is a necessary consequence of any revolutionary movement, which inevitably eat their own until the collapse comes.) Either it will corrode society so badly that we will become a third-rate country, or there will be a vicious backlash. Perhaps after the backlash, the academy can be reformed on principles pre-dating the current decline (i.e., sometime before 1950). And then everything old will really be new again. Sounds good to me.

Sadly, Thiel and especially Sacks now appear to have backed somewhat off their views in this book. (It is amusing, though, that the book contains negative attention to “early” gay rights initiatives, and yet Thiel and at least one major conservative character in the book have since come out as gay themselves. Nothing is ever as simple as it seems.) In part this is because it is clearly written by very smart, yet very young, men. In places, it is florid, and uses the metaphors and tropes of immature writers. But mostly it is because Thiel and Sacks now live in the tech world, which while it has libertarian elements, is strongly dominated by hardcore leftists, and there is no room at all for traditional conservatives. I guess none of this is surprising, though.

While the focus here is on the then-current complaints of the proponents of diversity/multiculturalism, today’s major areas of focus are nearly all seen in embryo. (One exception is the accusation of creation of stigma, the modern darling of the totalitarian left, which is used as an all-purpose weapon once leftist aggressors realized that it required no victim at all, just a feeling that others didn’t approve of what you were dong. Nor are bizarre inversions of reality like claims of gender fluidity seen here.) Microagressions are seen in passing where a student complains of “all the very small daily daggers one feels in the environment.” Puritanic regulation of sexual conduct while at the same time demanding total sexual freedom. Institutional racism as an unwashable Original Sin. This makes for interesting, if depressing, hindsight reading.

Now, like the Stay-Puft Man in Ghostbusters, these embryonic ideas have assumed monstrous proportions. I’m not sure what to do about that. There is probably little to actively do, except wait and see whether there will be an opportunity to reclaim the culture, or whether all that’s left to do is wait, on dune and headland, for the fire to sink. The arc of our culture since this book was written suggests the latter.

Opinion of a white male born in the upper-middle class that I hope you read if you were about to flame me
By Michael Horak
As my header states, I'm a white male born and educated in the upper-middle class. Also, like Thiel, I am a libertarian, although politically I'm a little more to the left than he is. I gave the book five stars because I agree with the central premise; however, I understand why people of certain backgrounds and beliefs describe the book as "yellow journalism" because I do agree that it does sensationalize to some extent. If what I've written so far has inflamed you and you believe I'm a bigot then you should continue reading because you are who I want to read this.

First of all, I know that in a way I'm lucky to have been born into a family that has both resources and values education and hard work. I agree that skin color, gender, and wealth create an uneven playing field. I would argue that of those three, wealth has the greatest effect and gender has the least effect. The reason I like this book is because it points out the negative long term effects of the politically correct (PC) culture that exists in the US. What do I mean by this? In a nutshell I mean that the efforts by the PC crowd have a long term effect of reducing diversity. I believe this is the central pillar of the book and I will explain more in the next paragraph.

As a scientist, the type of diversity that matters to me is diversity of opinion. When everyone thinks the same, people do not innovate and society does not move forward. As much as I believe in my understanding of the issue, if you have a different opinion and can back it up with intelligent discourse, that is the diversity I value and that is a positive for society. PC culture destroys this difference of opinion. People who do not have the same views as PC activists and the liberal media are labeled as "bigots". The end result is you get a large group of people of various races, genders/sexual orientations, height, weight, ..., incomes who all believe the same thing and if anyone, from either outside or inside the group, disagrees with an opinion or viewpoint of the group, they are ceremoniously cast away.

Let me give you an example. A common rally of the liberal media is gender income inequality. PC activists commonly state that women make $0.79 for every $1 a man makes. In some cases the PC activists get bold and also add, "for the same job". If you do research on this subject you will find that overall women in the labor force do make about $0.79 for every $1 a man makes. However, this does not take into effect the differences in job occupations and experience between men and women. Men tend to take riskier and more physically demanding jobs than women and also don't lose experience from spending time at home with their kids. When you filter for the same occupation and experience level the gap in pay decreases to less than $0.05. However, when I state this to people in the PC glob I am immediately labeled a bigot and "don't understand". Because my logic is different than their "pack's" opinion, my logic is negatively labeled and not even argued against.

Since I am writing this review over 20 years after the authors wrote this book everyone can see the long term consequences that this book identifies because they have had time to fully develop. People who publicly disagree with a viewpoint of the PC are many times chased on a witch hunt. The PC group has diversity in its members but not in its beliefs. I have one more closing point to add. This is not a new phenomenon, it has most likely been going on even before the birth of "modern humans." People who do not fall within the majority today are outsiders, first generation feminists were renegades, and scientists who believed the earth revolved around the sun were blasphemers. By labeling well educated people who do not share the same viewpoints as you bigots and failing to engage them in a debate, all you show is that you haven't learned enough from the past. Now who's the real bigot?

Cayson is livid with Skye for what she’s done. It’s not something small that can be swept under the rug. It’s not something he can just let go. What she did was unforgiveable and wrong on so many levels. But he can’t deny the truth. He still loves her. But will it be enough?

Silke gets tired of dealing with Arsen and his insecurities. Every step they take forward, they take eight backwards. But she has faith in him that he’ll change his ways. But how long can she hold onto that belief?

Conrad loves the close relationship he has with Beatrice. But he can’t deny he wants more. He doesn’t just want to be her friend. He wants all of her, every night, until the sun burns out. When he gives into his need, he kisses her like he’s always wanted. She returns the embrace and gives Conrad exactly what he wants. But where will it lead?

Theo and Alex love their new relationship. Sparks fly as kisses are shared, and Theo begins to question his sanity. How could he not have fallen for her in the beginning? As things heat up, their relationship takes an unexpected direction. Then Alex does something Theo is unsure he can forgive.

Another page turner in this series
By Julie Kirby
This was a good read, and emotional page turner.

Slade and Trinity are great, getting on really well, and its lovely its not all about the sex.

Carson and Skye, Wowzers! I really hope this makes them stronger, their break up has been really hard on both of them, although I'm note sure how I would react to something like that happening to me.

Theo and Alex are moving in the right direction, and I hope it continues that way.

Conrad and Beatrice, make a great couple, he has really opened up to her even though she keeps a lot of herself hidden. Conrad really has been a gentleman where Beatrice is concerned and its totally unjustified how she believes the word of her slutty friend, I hope she doesn't leave it too long, before she realises what she has with Conrad.

Silke and Arsen, just when you think they are making headway, she really sees something in him. I just wish he would see it for himself. That was quite a revelation, having such a hard childhood and thinking he would be exactly the same as his parents were, sadly that came true!

I'd like to think Silke will move on, but fear that is not on the cards for her, although he does love her, but it looks like the decision has been made for them.

The love lives of the 2nd generation is quite hard going with all of them; and when they think they've found 'The One' something throws it all off.

Can love save them all or ruin happily ever afters?
By Melena
Oh my E.L. Todd definitely knows how to keep a reader`s attention in the Forever and Ever series. I have to say through everything going on the one I am interested is Trinity and Arsen. I love that Arsen is like a modern day bad boy with a little bit of James Dean in him making me want to well just kiss and hug him. I feel for this guy for what he went through as a youngster and applaud Trinity for trying her hardest in showing him that everybody deserves love. Beatrice and Conrad I am still skeptical about these two for no matter how hard we try know her she pulls away. Makes me want to tear my hair out wanting to know more about her. I was laughing with Theo and Alex for one minute they hate each other the next they`re all over. It was hillarious to see them juggle their feelings like a seesaw between these two. E.L. Todd is not stopping at all with this series and interested to see more about Beatrice really curious about her story. Can`t wait for Book 9 in this series.

Drama!!!
By Cassandra Cole
Drama Drama and more drama!!! Are we ever going to get these kids straightened out?!? Conrad didn't tell Beatrice he was a man whore before she met him. But I'm not sure he had to. She is making such a fuss over it. I'm not sure where this will go but I don't think she's being fair.
Arsen! OH ARSEN!!! I'm struggling to believe the timing of him getting in trouble. I think he truly believes he's not worthy of Silke that he would've allowed something like this to happen if he thought it was best for her. However, he wasn't counting on her true love and hardheadedness! I still expect an HEA for these two but I just don't know how.
Skye finds out Cayson is near but still so angry with her. Can she live with it? Can she let him heal?
Slade is being Slade. For such a sexy beast, he can be a baby! I'm glad to see he's beginning to understand adulthood!
Onward! Gotta find out what happens next!!
