Super helpful for revised GRE

Just took the GRE and studied vocabulary only from these flash cards. I have to say they proved to be very helpful. A lot of them actually showed up on my test. I would definitely recommend them. The review before mine says the pronunciation is incorrect and the sentences seem niche, but that's not the direct purpose of these flash cards. They are meant to enhance your vocabulary specifically for GRE. And at that, they succeed. At least they did for me. You can always look up correct usage and pronunciation online. But knowing which words to know and what they mean, especially when used for their second meanings is what will help you do well on GRE. And these cards will be your friends along the way. Good luck!

Good starting point

These cards will help provide a good foundation for the verbal section of the GRE. But to shoot for a higher score, I recommend mastering these cards first and then going for an advanced set of cards and doing an in-depth study of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. One niggle about these cards is that they are smaller and flimsier than cards from other brands.

This box of vocab cards delivers with tons of vocabulary words and easy to remember definitions. The cards are a big thin, but it helps keep down the cost so I don't mind.

Fabulous reference

This book is superb. It is comprehensive, authoritative, and an invaluable reference guide for writers and other researchers. I was hesitant when I saw the listed reading level as age 4-8. That's clearly an error. This is a book for adults, and a really good one.

Excellent Reference to the Other World

Carol Rose's 'Spirit, Fairies, Leprechauns and Goblins' is exactly what it claims to be - an encyclopediac guide to all manner of spirits, ghosts, djinn, goblins, angels, demons, fairies, dwarves, gods and other denizens of folklore and myth. And while no such volume could ever be complete, given how rich (and often contradcitory) the world's folkelore really is, this volume is still quite good. No doubt those reading this book will have heard of, say, the Green Man, La Llorona, brownies, nagas, trolls and elves, but what about more obscure tales such as Pahuanuiapitaaiterai, the each usige, hantu ayer or leshii? Each spirit, goblin or deity is given a seperate, dictionary style entry, along with references and related articles. Entries may refer to individual beings (Coyote, Lilith, the Jersey Devil) or types of spirits (black dogs, ohdowas, pitris, roane). Furthermore, she also gives a series of appendices at the end, breaking down entries by type of spirit (Demon, Nat, Nymph, Keremet, etc), associations (spirits of water, spirits of nature, spirits of fate, spirits of disease, etc), and country or culture (Welsh, Gypsy, Middle Eastern, Brazilian, Vietnamese, Norse, etc).

One of the big strengths here is that Rose was so thorough in including often overlooked non-western beings, like Indian gandharvas, Malay langsuir, Afro-Brazilian Exu or the Penobscot wanagemeswak. In addition, she does make notes on regional variations on particular beings, such as the different role of Daevas in Hinduism and Persian Zoroastrianism, or how dwarves change in German, Scnadinavian and other folklores. And yet, as previous reviewers noted, she also sometimes displays very obvious western biases. For instance, saying Durga is 'evil' completely misunderstands her role in Hinduism. Far from being evil, Durga is a demon-slayer and one of the most beloved aspects of the Goddess (Devi) in all of India! Even in her more destructive aspect of Kali, she is still not 'evil.' Still, one cannot be an expert on everything, and excepting these cultural biases, this work is a good reference for looking up various spirit beliefs. More detailed research you can find elsewhere.

So while there are indeed a couple of shortcomings, this is still an excellent resource for looking up different types of goblins, bogies, phantoms, demons and other denizens of the invisible worlds. Couple this with a half-way decent library of folklore, mythology and legends and your set to do some serious research here. Students of folklore will get good use out of this book, especially with regards to the more obscure beings, so definately give this book a look. As for myself, I saw she has a companion volume, 'Giants, Monsters and Dragons,' which I am going to pick up soon.

Just what the title indicates

This is an amazingly comprehensive volume cataloguing spirits--supernatural beings less powerful than deities--from cultures around the world.
A book like this is hard to summarize in a review, but it suffices to say that this is a wonderfully broad overview of the subject, covering every culture and every spirit you can think of, with only a little bit of oversimplification. (Durga, for example, is referred to as evil, which is somewhat less than accurate.) Spirits, demons, djinns, faeries, and their kin are all present and accounted for. Use this as a first reference, then make sure to look more deeply into whatever interests you most.

Fails to deliver.

Doreen Virtue and Brian Weiss are two forces to be reckoned with in the metaphysical community, yet somehow this product fails to deliver. While the materials are of substantial quality, the images are very generic, and the deck is not well developed - leaving much to be desired. There was an immense amount of potential that was missed with this product. Please watch my video for the full review.

Very accurate and helpful

I was skeptical of this deck because of some negative reviews but as I already posted in a comment, I trust both of the authors of this deck, simply based on the good advice/wisdom I have received from their other books. I found this deck to be very helpful and I have incorporated it into other card oracle readings that I do (for myself and others.) I have only had the deck for about 10 days but I have already done several readings that were very accurate.

To each their own opinion -- so if it feels accurate to you, use it. If it feels silly or a game, then it's probably not the deck for you. While I don't specialize in past life regressions or readings, I have spent close to 30 years as a student of all things related to spirit. I'm currently an Interfaith Minister (from a 'real' seminary, in case you're wondering ;) and I do intuitive readings for people. My spiritual mentor was a minister who has conducted past life regressions with people for well over 25 years, so while I don't do them as part of MY service to people, I DO understand them and I am very familiar with the process. I only say this to give you some idea of my background.

I think this deck is probably best suited for someone who has extensive experience as a card reader, but if you feel "pulled" to buy this, then I would say, do it and follow the directions included with the deck and keep an open mind.

I also want to add that I found the images to be very workable. Personally I prefer a more generic open-to-interpretation image on my cards, but everyone has different tastes. These images are fairly basic but for me that was perfect. So it depends on your preference.

It knew what I have always felt from a past life.

Kinda interesting how I came across this deck. The night before I found it, my coven and I were talking about doing a Past Life reading on Samhain. Usually, since I am the one who does most of the divination, I would be the one to do the readings. As I was going through instagram, I found a picture of Doreen Virtue talking about this deck. Coincidence? During the course of the day, I have to say that there were enough hints telling me to get this deck. Told my boyfriend since he has prime and he ordered it for me.

The pictures are beautiful and many vintage. I think that many who buy her decks will be missing the "fluff" as there isn't "fluff" in the pictures. Lots of vintage feel in my opinion. There are no borders which was really nice. Never had a deck like that before and I must say I really like the no borders. The cards are sturdy and decent. The problem that I have is, as with all her new decks, they have this gold or silver edging. Apparently this deck had a lot of the gold smeared on the outside of about 10 cards in the deck which was hard to get rid of.

I did a 3 card reading for myself and also used Sirian Starseed Tarot to get further understanding and it was very eye opening and explained a lot of things as to my life now and why certain personal things are going on now in this life.

I will go with this is a pretty much accurate deck to use for past life readings as it did feel very accurate for myself as cards that I have always felt within were shown in the reading. I do wish there were more occupations, situations, time frames and regions in this deck. It does serve it's purpose.

With the box being bent when I received it, lack of additional cards that could have been put in this deck and the gold edging all over several cards, I gave this a 4.

If you are interested in doing past life readings, I recommend to add it to your collection as it was very eye opening for me and I am a tarot/oracle card junkie anyway...lol.

Required reading for all Caribbean nationals

This book should be required reading for all Caribbean people. This is the history we learnt in school told by a contemporary. It adds meat and marrow to the skeleton theories we memorized and regurgitated for external examinations. Maria Nugent was a woman of her times. She was, therefore, less than enthusiastic about being dispatched to a remote colonial outpost to live among the "blackies".

You have to be patient with poor Maria when reading her journal. She was orthodox in every way imaginable. But although she was not given to thinking outside the box, she was far from clueless. She was intelligent, if in a mundane way.

The prevailing mantra of the time was that empire was a noble project and slavery liberated the "blackies" from darkest (read non-Christian) cannibalistic Africa. There were times when I found her attempts at convincing herself of this quite frankly, amusing. In describing a scene where a new shipment of Africans had been brought ashore, she employed the most amazing mental gymnastics to convince herself that the new imports were happy to be where they were and in the state in which they found themselves. This same Maria Nugent is later terrified out of her skull when the happy "blackies" of Haiti inexplicably revolt. She was beside herself with worry that revolution fever would spred to Jamaica and infect the happy blackies there.

But don't be too hard on the good lady; she was a conventional "thinker"(now there's an oxymoron). Her journal is interesting from the point of view that it gives first hand narratives about events and a time which seem academic and far removed from who we are as 21st Century Caribbean people. Although I knew intellectually that these events were very real and that they have shaped who we now are; reading this book sharpened my emotional understanding of the events and time.

If you want to know Jamaica, you have to read this book. It is written by a unique and contented woman who lived in Jane Austen's time and was happily married and willing to use her good judgement and joie de vivre in conducting her daily life. A historic and historical document of great grace, humour and breadth.

The carpet stops and so does everything else

Unfortunately, I was not able to get this book to come up on my computer (Windows 7). I got the message "this item is not compatible with this device". I had this problem once before, also with a children's book. It is supposedly not a common occurrence but I wanted to put it out there that it is a possibility. Consequently, I had to read the story on my Kindle, so I was not able to enjoy the colors of the illustrations. Based on the book cover, it looks like they were probably very nice. The characters do look very friendly and have expressive faces throughout the book.
At one point in the book the author uses the word "flabbergasted". Not something you'll find in the average child's vocabulary. Still, there's nothing wrong in learning new words - actually, reading is a great way to do so. I'm just pointing it out so you know you will probably need to explain this to your child.
Otherwise, it was an enjoyable story. Nothing great, but fun. The biggest drawback was the way the book ended. I didn't even realize it was the end of the story until I turned the page and there was nothing else there. It really felt lacking and like it needed some better kind of wrap up to the events. Still, it is probably a story your children will enjoy.

This book is okay but did not hold the interest of my 4 year old grandson. The illustrations are too much the same and the ending is too abrupt.

Book started off OK, but there are errors. Also no actual ending. The book just stops and says the end. Super annoying!

This book clearly explains how easy it is to hear God and how He is constantly speaking to us...in so many ways that we so easily overlook. It is amazing to see how close...really close..God is to us and how simple it can be to hear His voice. He made it simple enough that a child can hear Him. Buy this book..you won't regret it!

About the Author
Galway Kinnell is a former MacArthur Fellow and has been state poet of Vermont. In 1982 his Selected Poems won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. For many years he was the Erich Maria Remarque Professor of Creative Writing at New York University. He is currently a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. For thirty-five years--from WHAT A KINGDOM IT WAS to THE BOOK OF NIGHTMARES to THREEE BOOKS--Galway Kinnell has been enriching American poetry, not only by his poems but also by his teaching and his powerful public readings.
