I bought this in 1993 when it first came out in paperback. Zachary Banning is a half breed who leaves his Texas home at the age of 14 when his step-father can't stand the sight of him and he learns his true heritage. Deborah Hamilton is from Natchez, Mississippi and has come to the Territory to wed a Spanish man who's rushed and pawing manner just slightly irritate her. A Comanche raid occurs on her wedding night and she is abducted by Spotted Pony and taken to the village. Zach under his Indian name of Hawk now, sees her and barters horses for her with Spotted Pony. Like all Indian Romances, Deborah learns the ways of the Comanche as she becomes more intrigued with Hawk. Virginia Brown is a wonderful writer of intrigue, suspense and romance rolled into one story!

This book changed my opinion...

I've never before enjoyed books centered around abduction by Indians, but this book convinced me that such a plot can be very intriguing if done correctly. I was swept away from the beginning. The author has done a magnificent job of portraying a character torn between his white heritage and his Indian heritage. And after the first chapter, who wouldn't root for this man anyway? All I can say is that I couldn't wait to turn the next page... and the next... and the next. Of course, I'd recommend this book to anyone.

Zach Banning is forced to leave the only home he knows when, after a brutal beating from his father, when he learns he is half-Indian. Conceived over 14 years earlier when his mother was kidnapped by Indians, he sets out to find a father he never knew and a way of life he has never lived. Now he faces a personal battle of finding himself. Who he really is and among what people should he live?
Twelve years later, Deborah Hamilton is being rushed into an unwelcome attempt to quickly consummate her marriage by her new husband when he is shot and killed by a band of Indians. She is kidnapped, along with the other women and children there, and the men left dead.
Zach, now living among the comanches with his Indian father and sister, feels a connection with Deborah the minute he lays his eyes on her. He immediately stakes his claim. Hawk, his Indian name, scares yet intrigues Deborah in a way she never though could be. While living with the Indians, Zach protects her in his own way without revealing much about himself. He soons realizes that he has to free her for the safety of his tribe.
Once back with her family, Deborah finds that life isn't what she imagined it would be upon her return and that she misses Zach. She soons finds herself in between an unwanted suitor and her dead's husband's family in a battle over land. And after unexpectedly Zach comes back into her life and he tries to protect her, it's a battle of wills as to if either can ever admit that they can and do belong together.
Lots of different things going on here...family feuds, secrets, romance, suspense, etc. It was really a great book. I can't wait to read more by this author.
